Natalie Portman: Lesbian Scene Was Key To ‘Black Swan’
Natalie Portman is happily pregnant and engaged to professional ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied. Her choreographer from Black Swan, Millepied won her heart while working closely with the actress as she trained intensely for the movie.
Portman, who is on one of two covers for EW’s Oscar race issue, explains the draw of a ballet film for viewers:
“Everyone was so worried about who was going to want to see this movie,” she told the magazine. “I remember them being like, ‘How do you get guys to a ballet movie? How do you get girls to a thriller?’ And the answer is a lesbian scene. Everyone wants to see that.”
It’s true. There is no doubt that was instrumental in getting lots of people to check it out. Although the Darren Aronofsky film is a psychological thriller, it was ultimately about dance and would be a tough sell to get viewers into the theaters.

Several hours after seeing the movie I am still blown away. The whole movie, script, camera work, pacing, dialogue and, oh, the acting melded together into a soul touching piece of art. It moved from the beginning to the end – alternately slowly and quickly engaging all the senses that movies can touch. A masterpiecea! I won’t comment on the juveniles who get hung up on the lesbian scene – if that’s why they go to movies and suppose they do – all the better. I hope this movie makes lots and lots of money. Everyone involved with it deserves credit – it worked as a unit – stitched together without one snag. Cheers and applause!!!!!
This movie started out great for me then descended into a remake of Carrie, all blood and guts and stupid fantasy scenes which undercut the dancing and tension that people experience prior to performances. Really, do we need to see Winona shoving a nail file into her face over and over? Wouldn’t some searing dialogue have done a better job of showing her as a tortured soul? And the lesbian scene was just gratuitous. This was a gimmick to try and show us how freed up Nina had become once she took drugs, but just didn’t work for me. I would have like to seen more dynamics between the rival dancers, more psychological warfare, and the scratching stuff, why not show anorexia, which is really what goes on? Waste of time.
A piece of art. Those that criticize the story fail to understand that this is a soul searching movie and at the end the lead dancer is awarded with the ultimate reward.
Lesbianism again. I’m a guy – it works for me, too, especially with someone as lovely as Natalie Portman.
But the fact remains that it’s a disordered perversion that Hollywood loves to promote these days, no matter what Ellen DeGenerate tells America five days a week.
How sad our entertainment world is today.
You know what’s really sad? The fact that you guys say THIS scene in particular is gratuitous. I agree, there are a lot of lesbian sex-kiss scenes in Hollywood that aren’t needed in the plot, and there’s even more guy on girl sex scenes that are not needed, even though i don’t see people complaining about that. Let’s go to the point:
In this movie, the lesbian scene it’s not gratuitous. If you weren’t sleeping in the theater until that part of the movie, you will realize (unless you’re really slow) that this is practically the POINT where Nina starts setting free her inner black swan. She tries to touch herself twice, it doesn’t really works. Then this innocent, sexually repressed girl, have sex with Lily, the person she thinks it’s the impersonation of the Black Swan, and probably is a little attracted in a bi curious way. [Spoiler] Even though the sex didn’t really occur, it leaved scars on Nina, it made her start unleashing the bad girl inside her. She’s masturbating while thinking of Lily, it doesn’t show it on the movie (you can interpret it, actually) but it’s quite “there” if you read the script (the one they used to make the film), there’s even a flash of her masturbating while the sex occurs.
So, how is THAT gratuitous? You people can’t just see a lesbian scene and say it’s not needed because it is what it is, not every movie is like that.
Even though Natalie is not really lying, she’s just joking. Of course not “everyone” wants to see a lesbian scene, she knows that.
There’s a LOT of straight sex scenes not needed and i rarely see people complain, stop being such hypocrites…
” it leaved scars on Nina” wow, i meant it “left” not leaved lol..
When their lips lock, what they don’t tell you is its the lips of Mila Kunis’s mouth on the lips between Nathalie Portman’s legs – beautiful – Mila Kunis shoud be renamed Mila the Kuni licker.
