Such are the times.

Whether it’s because it’s seen as politically incorrect or simply because the times are tough and no one wants extreme extravagance, Kate Middleton will not arrive for her wedding to Prince William in a horse drawn carriage.

The future Princess and future future Queen, will motor up in a car. A luxurious car, but still – not a fantasy-filled, pony-pulled pumpkin transport.

I hope it’s a convertible because the folks who line the streets heading to Westminster Abbey on April 29th will want to see her as up close and personal as possible.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s magical performance of Cee Lo Green’s “F*** You” song on Glee got noticed by everyone, including Green.

While Paltrow did the radio and TV-friendly version “Forget You,” Cee Lo was very happy with her rendition. So much so, he says the two are recording together:

“I am actually supposed to go into the studio with her in the next few days. We are doing another personalized version of ‘Forget You and we may do something spontaneous,”

The two will also be paired up for Saturday Night Live on January 15th as Paltrow hosts and Green is the musical guest. A collaboration is expected and downright demanded, I might add.

America’s sweetheart Valerie Bertinelli married her boyfriend Tom Vitale on New Year’s Day at their Malibu home.

The former One Day at a Time star is sharing her blissful story (and photographs!) with People Magazine. The actress tells the magazine:

“I could have spent the rest of my life with Tom and not be married, but I wanted to call him ‘my husband’,” the Hot in Cleveland star, 50, tells PEOPLE. “I really wanted to share how I feel about Tom with the people I love.”

Bertinelli is so feeling the love, she shared her day with 100 guests including her ex-husband Eddie Van Halen (their break-up did not go smoothly but they put their difference behind them.) The couple’s son, Wolfie was on hand as were her costars from her One Day days, Pat Harrington and Mackenzie Phillips.

Bertinelli wore the lovely blue silk chiffon bridal gown shown on the cover from designer David Meister.

Kelly Osbourne gets cuddly on the cover of Cosmopolitan UK for the February 2011 issue.

Osbourne, who recently got into a nasty one-sided twitter fight with ex Luke Worrall, gives up the details about her and Worrall (this interview was done before her twitter rant,) and her battle with weight:

On working it out with Luke: “We still have a lot to learn about life. A lot of mistakes were made, a lot of bad things were said. I think we need to spend time working on ourselves but it doesn’t erase the fact that I’m head over heels in love with him… I haven’t been with anyone since Luke.”

On her weight gain and loss: “When I got out of rehab and stopped using drugs, I replaced drugs with food. I was emotionally eating and hated the way I looked but I couldn’t mask my self-loathing with pills any more.”

The interview was given to Cosmo in November and the public blow-out happened Christmas Day but wow – what a change a few weeks makes in attitude. Hopefully Kelly comes out stronger and happier in the long run.

John Mellencamp and his soon-to-be ex-wife, Elaine Irwin announced their split just before the New Year but Mellencamp isn’t suffering a “Lonely Ol’ Night.”

The 59 year-old rocker is moving on to greener pastures with actress Meg Ryan. The two have been seen out and about together in Martha’s Vineyard and grocery shopping together near the 49 year-old Ryan’s home in SoHo.

Mellencamp and Ryan have been dating for about seven weeks, according to the insider and while the statement of for the split of the Mellencamp’s marriage was just released, the source told People magazine it happened quite some time before Meg and John began seeing each other.

I love John Mellencamp and think he is completely underrated as an American songwriter and musician. As far as his split from his wife, well it’s sad that after 20 years they have grown apart, but things happen and people move on. I must say I admire that the man is dating in his own age range! He hasn’t picked up with some 20 year-old and trying to recapture his youth.

Good heavens – he’s a true maverick!

Noted sci-fi/fantasy/comic book  author Neil Gaiman married musician Amanda Palmer of Dresden Dolls in a hush-hush ceremony this weekend.

The wedding took place in the Berkeley, CA living room of author Ayelet Waldman (who is married to the extremely hunky author Michael Chabon).    It was clear to those of us who follow both Neil and Ayelet on Twitter that SOMEthing was going on this weekend.  On Sunday, Ayelet Tweeted, “Hosting mystery fest tonight in my living room. Very exciting.” and “Garlands. Garlands are being woven.”    Meanwhile, Neil was known to be in San Francisco for the weekend for Dresden Dolls’ New Year’s Eve show.

On Monday, Neil let the cat out of the bag:

Ayelet ‘fessed up a couple of hours later.  Gaiman is the author of The Sandman and the novel Coraline (upon which the movie was based).   The couple had been engaged for a year and a day.

Congrats Neil and Amanda!  (And now you all know just how much of a total geek I am.)

Oprah Winfrey‘s new cable station, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) debuted on January 1, and its first day out went quite well.

On Saturday from 8-11 PM EST, an average of 1 million viewers tuned in to the fledgling channel.   And in the first hour of that block, OWN was the third most watched cable network among those critical 25 to 54 year old viewers.

First and second place that hour went to ESPN (which was showing the Fiesta Bowl) and USA Network (which was showing an NCIS marathon).    OWN was showing its reality series, Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes.   So there you go.  More people would rather watch NCIS than tune in to Oprah’s vanity project, and you can count me among those folks any day.  Oprah is generous and rich and all, but her ego is so big that pretty soon it’s going to be orbited by its own moon.

Drew Barrymore has bought herself a house fit for the Hollywood royalty she is – but she did it with thrift in mind nonetheless.  The actress’ new home is 72 years old, has six bedrooms and five bathrooms and sits on 3.5 acres of land in the exclusive Montecito area of Santa Barbara.  It was originally on the market for $8 million, but Drew paid just (just??!) $7 million for the property.
