In a raw and heartfelt interview, actor Liam Neeson finally speaks publicly about the death of his wife, Natasha Richardson for Esquire magazine’s March 2011 issue.
Richardson and Neeson were married for 15 years when the actress suffered a head injury skiing outside of Montreal, Canada. When she began complaining of headaches at her hotel later in the day, she was taken to a local hospital where Neeson says, for once, he was grateful that someone recognized him:
“I walked into the emergency – it’s like 70, 80 people, broken arms, black eyes, all that – and for the first time in years nobody recognises me. Not the nurses. The patients. No one. And I’ve come all this way, and they won’t let me see her,” he said.
The actor says he tried to use his phone, but a security guard stopped him and he walked outside. Thankfully, he came across a couple of nurses on break who got him in to see Richardson.
“And I see two nurses, ladies, having a cigarette,” he continued. “I walk up, and luckily one of them recognizes me. And I’ll tell you, I was so f—ing grateful -for the first time in I don’t know how long -to be recognized.”
Two years later and Neeson still feels the intense grief at unexpected times.
“It hits you in the middle of the night — well, it hits me in the middle of the night. I’m out walking. I’m feeling quite content. And it’s like suddenly, boom.”
The actor says he tried burying the pain by returning to work but he still lives with the notion of sadness striking at any time.
