The Kids Are Alright star Mark Ruffalo casts his unshaven, rumpled-shirt bedroom eyes at readers of Details May 2011 issue. He’s not really my type, but I know he totally does it for some of you out there! Here are some highlights from his interview.
On growing up on the edge of a forest in Wisconsin: “Those days in the woods were pretty magical for me as a kid. Your imagination can run completely wild, you can be whatever you want, whenever you want, and the days are just endless.”
On fleeing Los Angeles in 2009 for rural Callicoon, New York: “I’d had it with L.A., and I’d really had it with the business side of acting, the machinery of it all. You’re an artist, but then all of a sudden you’re a product at the same time, and there’s this company that’s sprung up around you. I got depressed. I was losing my love for it. So I said, ‘I’m done.’ I fired everybody and moved my family out here. I had to make a radical move.”
On playing the role of the CGI-generated Hulk in the upcoming film The Avengers: “It’s the absolute perfect marriage, because it relies on your imagination, your ability to project outside of yourself, to be the watcher and the watched. A stage actor has to be able to do that, because you’re telling the story with your body as much as your face and voice.”
