Ellen Barkin Wins Best Actress At The 2011 Tony Awards
Calling it the “proudest moment of [her] career,” Ellen Barkin took home a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play on Sunday night. She won the award for her performance in The Normal Heart, a play about the HIV-AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s in New York.

Although she appeared in several off-Broadway productions early in her career, Ellen’s role in The Normal Heart marked her Broadway debut. She noted her freshman status in her acceptance speech:
“Thank you for the way you’ve embraced me and welcomed me into your community. I am so grateful and so humbled to be in your company.”
