Matt Groening Reveals Which U. S. Springfield Is Home To ‘The Simpsons’
Springfield has been the home city for The Simpsons animated family and their shenanigans for over 20 years but exactly where – what state – have they been talking about?
Creator Matt Groening has finally revealed that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie are Oregonians!
“Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon,” Groening said in an interview with Smithsonian magazine, also revealing he lived on Evergreen Terrace as a youngster.
“The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show Father Knows Best took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do.”
Groening also mentions growing up in Portland and being on the nasty receiving end of some schoolyard bullying. The animator and writer won’t mention those childhood terrors by name but did allude to building a character or two on the show with their names.
Could he be referring to Nelson, Jimbo and Kearney? Or did he disguise them as other not-very-nice people in the series…
