Naomi Watts is in Croatia channeling the late Princess Diana as she films Caught In Flight, the story of Diana’s romance with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan and her last days before the fatal car crash in Paris.

“It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role,” Watts said in a statement when she got the gig. “Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”

The 43 year-old actress has the late Princess of Wales’ signature look, hair and gorgeous style down. Watts, is playing Diana, who, at the time of her death, was 36. The 7 year age difference is unnoticeable.

Watts took the role after Jessica Chastain, who was the front runner for a long time, dropped out. Dr. Khan will be portrayed by LOST alum Naveen Andrews.

The film is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel whose credit includes Downfall, the last days of the Nazi regime.

Caught In Flight will be released in 2013.
