TRAGEDY: Connecticut School Shooter Kills 20 Children, 6 Adults – Updated

UPDATE:  Nancy Lanza was found dead at the home she shared with her son, Adam.   Sources are reporting that he killed her before driving her car to Sandy Hook Elementary.  Contrary to early reports, Nancy was not a teacher at the school, and appeared to have no connection to it.

Tragedy struck the town of Newtown, Connecticut today when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where his mother worked as a teacher.

20 year old Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six adults in his attack on two classrooms, including his mother’s kindergarten classroom.  Nancy Lanza, the principal and the school psychologist were also among the dead.  Adam Lanza was found dead in the school building from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Three weapons were found at the scene:  a Sig Sauer, a Glock and a .223 caliber rifle.

Lanza’s older brother, Ryan Lanza, was incorrectly identified as the shooter in early reports.  He was questioned by police after being located in New Jersey.  He said his brother, who lived with their mother, had mental health issues and may have been “somewhat autistic.”  Ryan Lanza appears to have had no involvement in the massacre.

Children who survived the attack told harrowing stories of cowering in corners and closets, shielded by teachers.   Police helped evacuate children from the school, telling them to hold hands and keep their eyes closed.

President Barack Obama wiped away tears as he addressed reporters, calling the shooting “heinous.”
