The 2013 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductees were announced last week.  It’s an eclectic group, sure to please some and baffle others.  Let’s take a look at the honorees.

Heart – Sisters Anne Wilson and Nancy Wilson were the first women to front a hard rock band.  They got their start in the 1970s and now not a day goes by when you don’t hear one of their songs on a classic rock station.

Public Enemy – Public Enemy pushed hip-hop forward in many ways – conceptually, technically and politically (“Fight The Power”).  This is what Flava Flav did before he had a reality show, kids.

Randy Newman – Much-celebrated and awarded, Newman has scored over a dozen films, including all of Disney’s Toy Story movies, Monsters, Inc. and Cars.

Rush – Folks either love or hate this Canadian progressive rock trio.  Their fans have been gunning for their induction for years now, so this probably feels somewhat vindicating.  “It’s a terrific honor and we’ll show up smiling,” Rush’s singer and bassist, Geddy Lee, told Rolling Stone. “It made my mom happy, so that’s worth it.” As for those dedicated fans, Lee said, “It was a cause they championed.  I’m very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure.”

Two performers will be inducted posthumously.

Albert King (1923-1992) – King was a blues guitarist best known for his single “Born Under A Bad Sign.”

Donna Summer (1948-2012) – The undisputed Queen of Disco was a songwriter as well as a singer, and got her start in a psychedelic rock band.

In addition, two inductees will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award For Lifetime Achievement:  producer/songwriter Lou Adler, and the legendary producer/composer Quincy Jones.

The induction ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on April 19, 2013, and will air on HBO a month later. What do you think of this year’s list of honorees?
