1950s Singing Star Patti Page Dead At Age 85
Singer Patti Page died on New Year’s Day in Encinitas, California. She was 85 years old.
Born Clara Ann Fowler in Oklahoma in 1927, Page began her music career performing on radio shows. She signed a contract with Mercury Records in 1947 and had her first hit song, “Confess,” in 1948. She would go on to achieve an incredible 111 chart hits, including “Tennessee Waltz,” “(How Much Is That) Doggie In The Window,” and “With My Eyes Wide Open, I’m Dreaming,” and four #1 records.
Page’s pop style included elements of jazz, but she was better known for her success as a country music crossover act. She also pioneered the use of overdubbing her voice to provide her own back-up vocal harmonies.
The singer was married three times and had two adopted children. She actively toured until late 2012, when she announced her retirement due to health reasons.
