Conrad Bain of ‘Diff’rent Strokes’ Dead At 89

Gary Coleman and Conrad Bain

Actor Conrad Bain died Monday of natural causes in his hometown of Livermore, Calif.

Bain is best known for his role as businessman Phillip Drummond on Diff’rent Strokes, which ran from 1978-1986.  He played the adoptive father of Arnold (Gary Coleman) and Willis Jackson (Todd Bridges), two African-American boys from Harlem.   Prior to that, he spent several years on the CBS sitcom Maude.

Born in Alberta, Canada, the actor enjoyed success on Broadway and appeared in a few films before landing his breakthrough television roles.

Bain was married to Monica Sloan from 1945 until her death in 2009.  They had four children, three sons and a daughter, Jennifer.  She told People about the similarities between her father and Phillip Drummond.

“My father really was a lot like his character in Diff’rent Strokes.  He had that warmth and stability. He also was a very intellectual person.  Dad was proud of his work on that show.”
