Are you Ready for William Rast?

Justin Timberlake is prepping the launch of his long-talked-about clothing line William Rast with a series of viral online videos in the guise of a movie (the appropriately-titled William Rast Movie).  He curses, he smokes, he’s being filmed by his “girlfriend” (portrayed as a varitable Bonnie to his Clyde) and she’s not Jessica Biel!  Looks like most of the clothes are for sale online and in-stores in some of the larger metro area shops.

This better be some of the most scandalous clothing ever.

Check out the “trailers” here.

Chris Doubles His Pleasure in Doublemint Gum Endorsement

Get that money, youngin! Chris Brown has been slaying the game for about three years now, so is it really a surprise to see him spin his hit single “Forever” (which was voted off the track listing by his A&R crew on his album Exclusive’s original track listing) into a Doublemint gum commercial.

I can’t say I didn’t think of the classic gum commercials when I first heard his lyrics “double your pleasure, double your fun” the first few times I heard it, so it’s tongue-in-cheek, and amusing as hell to see it come to fruition.

With “Paper Planes” Success, Is M.I.A. Still “Retired”?

miaretirement.jpg

If you’ve been paying attention to radio spins or chart domination the last quarter of this summer, you noticed the rise of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” from her album Kala, which was released an entire YEAR ago, in August ‘07.

Pineapple Express changed so much for the Sri Lankan-born rapper (who now calls the UK home) who declared at this summer’s Bonnaroo festival that she was retiring from music altogether. Her Clash-sampling “Paper Planes” cut, which was featured on the movie’s trailer rose quickly to number 1 on the iTunes & Billboard singles charts, has apparently given her a new take on her upsetting announcement.

When Entertainment Weekly asked her if she really meant what she said about retiring, here’s what the indie scene princess had to say:

Well, it was my last ever show. And it still is. I stopped touring after that and I didn’t want to make music again. I was quite happy to just leave it all behind. I was happy with what I had achieved. Now, with the success of “Paper Planes,” there’s pull for me to make another record. Even my mum believes in me more [laughs]. It’s a nice encouragement. But I was planning my life as a fishing woman on the outskirts of Cambodia. That’s a joke.

I still don’t know what to think, but it’s not a new concept to go out a champion.

Solange Knowles, I’m Already Over You

I’m pissed off! I was really rooting for Solange Knowles this time around, despite her previous strikes (see Bring it On 2, etc.), to be the “real” sister out of the bunch. The one who was approachable, and truly embraced the 60’s swagger, being our anti-diva. Well NO MAS!

Watch as the little sister that just couldn’t pulls a serious ego trip on live TV promoting her new album after a reporter segwayed into her live interview by mentioning Beyonce, her more-talented, and much-more-famous big sister. The television station, which broadcasts from Las Vegas had been discussing during commercial break the closing of Jay-Z’s 40/40 club in Vegas. Highlight of the clip is when miss So-So condemns the reporter for discussing her brother-in-law’s establishment (like it had anything to do with her), only for her publicist to tell her that that wasn’t live.

WHO IS THIS CHICK?!?!?!?!!

Oh yeah, AND YOUR SISTER IS BEYONCE! AND YOUR SISTER IS BEYONCE! AND YOUR SISTER IS BEYONCE! AND YOUR SISTER IS BEYONCE!

VIDEO PREMIERE: Heidi Montag - “Overdosin’”

Surprisingly (especially to myself), I don’t have a lot of bad to say about this video. If more artists stuck to their schtick like Heidi Montag, the world would be a much better place. The font, intentionally amateur (I hope), and the “let’s smear Vasoline on the lens” effect compliment the dominance of camp, which The Hills star has perfected like Fellini and baroque.

What is it they say? If it ain’t baroque, don’t fix it? She can fix her nose all she wants, but as long as she continues not taking herself too seriously (Olivia Newton John blaspheming and all), I’m not hatin’!

Dr. Dre’s Son Found Dead at 20, Cause Undetermined

Tragedy has struck hip hop royalty. Andre Romelle Young Jr., the 20-year-old son of iconic producer Dr. Dre was found dead in his Woodland Hills, CA home Saturday morning from an apparently unknown (or yet-unreleased) cause. The coroner’s office was unable to confirm to press whether or not Young was indeed Dre’s son, until today’s confirmation by the superstar’s rep.

An autopsy was conducted yesterday, but the cause-of-death results were inconclusive. Toxicology results will likely shed more light upon the tragedy.

According to the coroner’s spokesperson, Young had spent the previous evening with friends. His mother told police that he’d returned home Saturday at around 5:30 a.m., and that she’d heard him in his bedroom. Police said they did not suspect foul play.

“Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son Andre Young Jr. Please respect his family’s grief and privacy at this time,” a spokesperson for Dre released to the press today.

VIDEO PREMIERE: T-Pain feat. Lil’ Wayne - “Can’t Believe It”

Whether you consider yourself a hip-hop fan, or just a pop fan, you won’t be able to avoid this track. Captained by arguably our generation’s biggest Billboard melody maker, T-Pain, he collaborates for the second time this year (so far!) with Lil’ Wayne for the ear candy track “Can’t Believe It”.

While it won’t be receiving any ASCAP awards (who knew you could rhyme “Wiscansin” with “what’s happnin’?”) the video is a sleek slideshow of green screens that won’t get boring to look at anytime soon.

Thr33 Rings drops later this Fall.

Iconic Rock Producer Dead at 39

He’s the man behind some of contemporary punk rock’s biggest hitmakers, like Blink-182, A.F.I., Alkaline Trio, and Sum41 - but what you may not know about uber-producer Jerry Finn is that he passed away five days ago, after being taken off life support after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage.

“One of my best friends passed away…  Jerry Finn was one of the most talented, funniest, coolest, smartest and honest people I’ve ever known. He was true in every sense of the word. True in his love of music, true in his friendships; Jerry loved life. He was happiest when quietly making music he loved, and loudly making fun of everything he didn’t. When I think of times spent with Jerry, all I can think of is us laughing. … He’s just one of those guys with the quickest wit in the room. He also knows more about music than anyone. … I feel blessed to have worked with and learned so much from him. But most of all, I am honored to call him my dear friend. Jerry, I miss you already,” blogged Mark Hoppus of Blink-182.

NEW VIDEO: Cassie feat. Lil’ Wayne - “Official Girl”

Cassie who arguably may or may not be more successful at modeling than selling albums, is gearing up for her sophomore album release (under the strong arm of Diddy) and a video this polished isn’t a bad way to start! Riding shotgun alongside our highets-grossing rapper Lil’ Wayne, “Official Girl” is a tale as old as time, a woman stuck stalling in the “unofficial girlfriend” lane, which not only proves how unoriginal the title is, but also how unoriginal this charted course into forced success is becoming.

Is anyone really ready for a gangster Cassie?

Aaliyah, 7 Years Ago

It’s been seven years already? Sadly, it has, and what a change the music industry has been through since the blossoming R&pop princess and actress was tragically killed in a plane accident in Abaco Island, Bahamas. We’ve still got our up and coming music princesses, but it seems despite a few, Aaliyah was in ways the last of her kind– a young musician who was truly conquering huge feats: a role in the Matrix sequel that was cut short, alongside two additional movie roles, and promoting an album that many defend as having ushered in the sounds of R&B that we know and love today.

Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale: What’s In a Name?

In an era when celeb baby names are downright bizarre (ya heard, Nicholas Cage??), it’s important not to lump in the unique with the rest of the bunch. When Gwen Stefani and hubby Gavin Rossdale announced the name of their second son yesterday, a lot of people (myself included, admittedly) scratched their heads.

But let’s look a little closer. The couple clearly has an affinity for Jamaica (No Doubt’s rooted sound is ska, a derivative of rasta-rock, native to the island, and their son Kingston is named after its capital city) so it’s fitting that son numero dos is named after the island’s patron saint Bob Marley (Marley’s real name was Robert Nesta Marley).

Shout-outs to a parents’ home city/state is also popular (or even where the child was conceived, *ahem* Brooklyn Beckham and Paris Hilton), so while I’m not positive, I’m sure Zuma comes from Stefani’s native Malibu/Orange County, CA upbringing near famed Zuma Beach.

If you need someone to explain the significance of “Rock”, then simply start punching yourself in the face.

Bloc Party Gives Early Invitation to “Intimacy”

If there’s one thing that can be said about the music industry these days, it’s that there are plenty of lessons to be learned (and equally plenty to be taught).  After seeing the success bands like Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead have had with the “digital leak” strategy, Bloc Party is offering fans a chance to download their 10-track LP Intimacy (the group’s 3rd) on BlocParty.com as early as… well, now.

The album will officially hit record store shelves October 28th.

NEW VIDEO: Solange & the Hadley St. Dreams - “Sandcastle Disco”

I’ve really gotta hand it to Solange. After a failed attempt at a hit album, a failed marriage (that produced the adorable “Baby Daniel”) she seemed to begin feeling comfortable living in big sister Beyonce’s shadow. Her recent turn as a neo-60’s starlet (hardly an original approach after the Winehouse/Duffy/Allen/Ronson bomb) was unexpected to say the least, but its her stage presence and approachability that’s most surprising. Just this month, an obviously-drunk concert-goer decided to join Miss Knowles on-stage, was ushered away by security, only to be called back by the singer who danced with him throughout her set, after saying “He ain’t hurtin nobody!” Hardly the un-diva approach her sister would have taken, no?

Here with her second single off her upcoming album, “Sandcastle Disco” continues the retro feel, combining startlingly fresh visuals and a peppy club-friendly collection of melody.

Is Hip Hop Doing Obama More Harm Than Good?

It’s the elephant in the room that no one really wants to talk about, but it needs to be addressed.  Is hip hop and hip hop culture’s embrace of democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama doing him more harm than good? To an extent, I say yes.  To another extent, I say no.

Two legends in hip hop serve as good examples of both extremes (for me at least).  Meet LL Cool J and Nas.

“He’s gonna win,” LL Cool J told MTV News matter of factly, as if the outcome of this fall’s presidential election were already a foregone conclusion. “We need to support Barack Obama and his quest for the Oval Office.”

The Queens-native has long been a crossover artist, making radio-friendly hits, even appearing on Sesame Street, but a temper tantrum with label Def Jam (and subsequent boss Jay-Z) and an artistic pairing with 50 Cent later, Cool J seems desperate, frustrated, and a tad militant.  Militant hip-hoppers scare middle Americans teetering between the donkey and the elephant.

“I think Barack can help cure the country, not just [for] us blacks, but also with all Americans. I think there’s so much our president can do. [Obama] seems like a human being — I say that because a lot of presidents don’t seem like human beings, they seem like straight-up businessmen who care about nothing but the business,” said Nasir, one of 08’s more eyebrow-raising artists said.  Having taken a bit of the “chill out homes” medicine, he went from tightening the fist, putting forth an album concept stirring the Don Imus pot, to loosening the fist and releasing a lot of racially non-descript and intellectually-giddy statements–surprisingly the less threatening.

Proposed question being though, do the oversized, bedazzled, and airbrushed t-shirts do Obama more harm?  While they certainly might make the more staunch supporters shake their head, this is America after-all, and B’Diddy is certainly one to support freedom of expression.  From speaking in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects to Marseille, France, could the Illinois senator have his brakes squeezed by his own home country’s swagger?

Dave Matthews Band Saxophonist, Dead at 46

Saxophone player LeRoi Moore, of the Dave Matthews Band died this evening at the young age of 46 after complications from a now-fatal ATV accident almost two months ago. In the accident outside of the band’s native Charlottesville, VA, Moore suffered a punctured lung and broken ribs, but he’d recently returned to supervised treatment after experiencing what doctors are calling “sudden complications”

The band was still scheduled to play Tuesday night at LA’s Staples Center, according to the band’s website. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin has been filling in for the fallen musician since the accident.

Thoughts and prayers from the BSC family go out to Moore’s family and friends.

Check out this goosebump-inducing clip of Moore playing alongside pal John Mayer at the 2007 Virginia Tech Memorial Concert.

Mariah, Beyonce, Fergie, Miley, & Ri-Ri to Collab

This sounds like a bad joke.  Two divas fight in a parking lot, spilling into a bar where a former meth-head, an alien, and a 15-year-old with a voice like Kathleen Turner are doing shots.  Whaddya get?  A cancer-benefitting single produced by the likes of L.A. Reid and Babyface!

The joke gets a lot more complicated when you throw in the likes of Keyshia Cole, Natasha Beddingfield, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood, so don’t even get me started!

The collaboration will be sold exclusively (of course) on iTunes beginning September 2nd, all to promote the “Stand Up” special on ABC networks September 5th.

Among the stars confirmed to either appear or answer phones on the TV broadcast so far are: Casey Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Christina Applegate, Lance Armstrong, Abigail Breslin, Josh Brolin, David Cook, Dana Delany, Fran Drescher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kirsten Dunst, Elizabeth Edwards, Jon Favreau, America Ferrera, Neil Patrick Harris, Salma Hayek, Scarlett Johansson, Masi Oka, Danica Patrick, Christina Ricci, Robin Roberts, Homer Simpson, Marge Simpson, Meryl Streep, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Goran Visnjic, Forest Whitaker and Reese Witherspoon.

Kid Rock Is Smart, Rebels Against Digital

If you’re heading to iTunes to cop your .mp4 of Kid Rock’s new single “All Summer Long,” don’t waste your time. Sure, not every artist it on iTunes, but never has one been so deliberately against the digital download maven before. Or maybe it’s simply Kid trying to prove a point, stubborn or not.

The move has paid off, and his latest album American Jesus rocketed back into the top 10 from near obscurity (not even in the top 200 after its original #1 debut), a calculated move based on the idea that people would be willing to pay the full album price to own the song. It paid off!

“This whole thing wasn’t some attempt to change the way the industry works or some sh– like that. It was basically me knowing I had a good song, one that people would love when they heard it,” he explained. “I mean, people say iTunes is popular because it’s convenient, but so is McDonald’s — that don’t mean people aren’t still making reservations to go eat at fancy restaurants too.

“I knew the track was solid — it’s got two of the best songs of all time mashed up together [Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Sweet Home Alabama' and Warren Zevon's 'Werewolves of London'], it’s got great melodies, so really, my work was done,” he continued. “I knew people would hear it and know I wrote it. They’d know it was real, and there’d be that connection. And tha
