Johnny Depp is a busy man these days, Alice in Wonderland, another Pirates of the Caribbean Sequel, The Lone Ranger, voice acting in Rango, and now The Hand of Dante.

Johnny Depp’s production company Infinitum Nihil has acquired screen rights to the Nick Tosches novel “In the Hand of Dante.” The novel will be developed as a potential star vehicle for Depp.

Depp will produce with his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski. The company, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. and Graham King’s GK Films, optioned the book with its own coin.

Book revolves around Dante’s masterwork ”The Divine Comedy,” and tells parallel storylines involving Dante in 14th-century Italy as he tries to complete the work, and a contemporary storyline involving Tosches, who is asked to authenticate what might be Dante’s original manuscript. Depp would play Tosches. The novel was published in 2002.

I’ll pretty much see anything Depp agrees to be in, he’s made a lot of great choices so far.

That’s right a sequel to the goofy comedy starring Ben Stiller as supermodel Derek Zoolander is coming. Stiller said:

He says, “I’ve been trying to get Zoolander 2 together and we’ve had a few scripts. I feel that is the sequel I really would like to do some day because I like the original and I would make sure it was something new and worthy of it first.” 

The first one was pretty funny. It takes the cake as the most stupid movie that I actually enjoyed.

With her sudden rush of stardom comes a major role. Kristen Stewart will play Joan Jett in a Biopic film called The Runaways.

Kristen Stewart is set to portray Joan Jett in “The Runaways,” the rock ‘n’ roll biopic of the 1970s all-girl band.

Video director Floria Sigismondi wrote the screenplay and is directing, while John and Art Linson and River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad are producing. Jett will act as an executive producer.

I’m not all that confident in her abilities as an actress but she’s not bad I guess. She’s just popular, funny how high school teen drama is what made her that way.

More details on the Planet of the Apes prequel have emerged. The new title is Ceasar and the man writing and directing it is Scott Frank.

Caesar is not a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. This is a fact that Frank can’t stress to you enough - his film will not feature talking monkeys, and it will not end with chimpanzees running wild in the streets, taking over the world. But it isn’t entirely divorced from the world of Planet of the Apes, either. In fact, Frank sees his movie as the opening chapter in a saga that could span the thousand years between today and a world where apes rule.

What’s most exciting about Caesar is that Frank is committed to telling a hard science fiction story. The science that creates a hyper-intelligent chimpanzee is based on current real world research - this film would just take that science one step further. He’s also committed to telling a story based on character, not antic ape action. His plan for Caesar is one where you come to really feel for this ape, even as the final act sees him taking actions that may be hard for us to agree with.

I thought Minority Report was pretty good script-wise, and this is the man responsible for that. He’s good with Sci-Fi, but this sounds more like an animal war film. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

The re-release of the mega-hit The Dark Knight planned for January has been Cancelled.

In September, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures was planning to rerelease The Dark Knight in theaters in January. We have learned that is no longer the case.

Warner Bros. Pictures domestic distribution president Dan Fellman had acknowledged in September that talks were taking place with IMAX executives about the prospect of restoring the film to some number of giant-screen venues in January. It was uncertain whether The Dark Knight would also reappear in conventional theaters.

The movie would have easily passed the $1 Billion mark had the plans come to fruition. It’s a shame, I really wanted to go see it again at the IMAX.

The new film, Nottingham starring Russell Crowe directed by Ridley Scott has new plot details. 

Scott told us recently that Crowe is playing both Robin Hood and Nottingham which left a few people scratching their heads. It wasn’t so confusing in retrospect given what has been reported about the script elsewhere.

But now Brian Grazer has further clarified to MTV News how this dual role thing is going to work AND he even dropped a bit of a bomb about how the beginning of the film plays out. So spoiler-scared folk please go no further.

Asked about the confusion over who Russell is in fact playing, Grazer said “The two role confusion is that what Robin Hood does is he sees Nottingham in battle very early in the movie and Nottingham dies. And Robin Hood takes over the identity of Nottingham. Thats how it plays out.” Grazer went on to call the film “an origin story” for the characters.

Well, I certainly hope this iteration of the story will be solid, it sounds a little contrived at the moment.

Well here’s one I didn’t expect to see. Keanu Reeves may be starring in a sequel to the Speed movies.

However, an AICN reader sent us a brief message (adequately contextualizing how he came across the following information), offering a tantalizing clue as to how Fox wants to get up to SPEED again. And…it may NOT be a remake?

Here’s what his message said:

There’s a scriptment floating around that reintroduces Jack Traven. So the studios are hoping to get Keanu back on board. 

For those who’ve forgotten (or never cared enough to remember), the “Jack Traven” character originated by Keanu in the first film did not appear in SPEED 2; Reeves was replaced by the relentlessly bland Jason Patric (starring in a new role).

I couldn’t care less about a sequel, my bet is that this is a just a goofy rumor. I think the public is smart enough… oh no, never mind this will be a hit.

Good news, Angelina Jolie will star in the film Erika Salt

The spy thriller “Ediwn A. Salt” has been renamed “Erika Salt” to accomodate female lead Angelina Jolie reports Production Weekly.

Jolie will play a CIA officer fingered as a Russian sleeper agent out to assassinate the president. She escapes capture and fights to reunite with her family and prove she’s not a traitor.

Tom Cruise was originally attached to play the titular character.

Despite the rumors that she was quitting the project due to the twin babies, she is in fact still taking on the role. And she’s gonna be great, as usual.

A brand new John Grisham legal thriller has been put in the pipeline called The Associate starring Shia LaBeouf.

Paramount Pictures has set Shia LaBeouf to play the title role in the bigscreen version of John Grisham’s upcoming legal thriller ”The Associate,” which the studio has just acquired rights to.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing.

LaBeouf will play a student who’s about to graduate from Yale Law School when he’s manipulated into accepting a job at a prestige law firm and given privileged information about a multibillion-dollar lawsuit.

The novel, Grisham’s first legal thriller since 2005’s “The Broker,” will be published in January by Random House.

Sounds promising, I still don’t get why LaBeouf is such a big star but more power to him.

A movie based on the HBO series Rome, may be coming to a theater near you. 

Bruno Heller says he wants to produce a theatrical wrap-up to his critically beloved and prematurely canceled HBO drama “Rome.” 

“There is talk of doing a movie version,” he said. “It’s moving along. It’s not there until it is there. I would love to round that show off.”

The lavish period drama ran for two seasons on HBO, which co-produced the series with the BBC. With the final season of “The Sopranos” as its lead-in, the first season was solidly rated, but high production costs presented the network with a tough call on the pickup. HBO opted for a second season to help get more value from its initial investment but not a third, effectively canceling the show in summer 2006 before the second season debuted the following January. The “Rome” sets were destroyed, and the actors were released from their contracts, making the decision all but irreversible. 

Sounds interesting, regardless of having seen the show or not; which I haven’t.

Details have emerged on the script for the upcoming Brett Ratner directed Beverly Hills Cop 2009:

Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) is killed from a fall out of the 20th story of the Los Angeles Police Headquarters, but Axel (Eddie Murphy) refuses to believe it was a suicide. He is teamed up with a fat rookie cop with low self-esteem named Goodwin to solve the “murder”. And when he’s not on the case, Axel is trying to hook Goodwin up with a lady cop in the facial recognition department whom he has a crush on, and teach him the ropes. And the whole thing degenerates into a “pretty standard police corruption story”. How bad does this sound already? Well here are the top four reasons (quoted directly from Latino Review) on why this will probably suck:

• “A lot of the shit in the middle is way boring.”
• “Axel Foley has no funny lines”
• “It’s like Brandt and Haas saw the first BHC and just didn’t have the energy to write anything that matched up to it.”
• “It’s almost like the writers took an Arnold Schwarzenneger script they had lying around and changed the details to make it a Beverly Hills Copmovie. There’s no fun in it.”

Eddie Murphy is old news. Maybe if he magically becomes funny again the movie will be good. I’m not looking forward to this one at all.
