So in summary of the 2008 Grammy Award presentation tonight, here’s a list of my thoughts on the top 10 Grammy moments.
10 - Coldplay apologizes to Sir Paul McCartney while accepting their award for “Song of the Year” for wearing outfits blatantly inspired by The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
9 - blink182 appear on-stage together for the first time as a trio since 2004, and officially announce their reunion as a group - as Travis Barker confirms “blink182 is back!”
8 - Both T.I. and Lil’ Wayne contend for best white R&Pop artist collaborations with Justin Timberlake backing Tip (for “Dead and Gone”) and Robin Thicke joining Weezy for his New Orleans-inspired performance of “Tie Me Down”. The winner? Wayne - but not by much. Both were incredible.
7 - A healthy-looking Natalie Cole hits the stage to present the award Record of the Year, after a well-publicized battle with Hepatitis C that hospitalized the daughter of a legend earlier last year - still awaiting a kidney transplant.
6 - Youngest Jonas Brother Nick forgets the lyrics to Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”, but doesn’t let it affect his confidence, and continues to gyrate and hammer the guitar within a foot of the legendary singer (who moments before sung the chorus to their smash “Burnin’ Up” - weird).
5 - A very very pregnant M.I.A. performs alongside hip hop’s leading men Kanye West, T.I., Jay-Z, and Lil’ Wayne for the “rap pack”’s performance of “Swagga Like Us” (from T.I.’s nominated “Paper Trail”).
4 - It became obvious that the Recording Academy has a vendetta against 2/3 heterosexual virginity-pledged boy bands when scorned exes Miley Cyrus (who dated Nick Jonas) and Taylor Swift (who dated Joe Jonas) performed a duet of “15″ (packing a swift kick to the nuts with lyrics like “when you’re 15 and someone tells you they love you, you’re gonna believe them.”
3 - Paul McCartney shows a packed house that the spirit that revolutionized contemporary music - that of The Beatles, is still alive and kicking, after performing a rousing version of “I Saw Her Standing There”. Nostalgia at its finest!
2 - Whitney Houston opens the show to present the award for Best R&B Album looking better than she has in years, speaking in a voice comfortingly-hoarse from performing at Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy bash (officially ushering in her comeback) just hours prior.
1 - Jennifer Hudson performs “You Pulled Me Through” backed by a beautiful choir, and breaks down at the end, an obvious reference thanking those who supported her just last year when her mother, brother, and nephew were murdered. Sine her performance of the National Anthem at the Super Bowl was pre-recorded, we witnessed her first live performance since the tragedies - an event so emotional it even had botox queen Nicole Kidman weeping (I love audience cut-away shots!)
