U2, Rihanna And Justin Bieber Recording Album For Japan Benefit

Celebrity musicians and singers are lining up to appear on a charity album to benefit the victims of the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami.

The digital album is being rushed to be available as early as the end of this week and includes artists Rihanna, U2, Justin Bieber, Nicky Minaj, and Bon Jovi are participating.

It is hoped that Lady Gaga will also be available to be featured for the album which will donate the money to the Japanese Red Cross.

Universal Music spokesperson said “We are doing it only digitally because it is faster, and this will be a worldwide release. The plan is to have it available later this week.”

The tracklisting is still unknown and it hasn’t been said whether it will feature previously released music, new singles or a combination.

The record label is trying to line up more artists who are willing to waive royalty fees to collaborate on the digital album so that more money goes directly to the Red Cross.

The confirmed death toll of the quake and tsunami stands at over 9,000 people with 13,000 still unaccounted for.

Penelope Cruz Rounds Up Hollywood For French Vogue

Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts, and Penelope Cruz for French Vogue May 2010

Getting actress Penelope Cruz to guest edit the May edition of French Vogue really came with some perks namely Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet and Bono, to name a few. The actresses all appear together on one cover in Gap t-shirts that benefit Bono’s ONE charity. The other two alterna-covers have Penny cozied up to Bono for one and Cruz wrapping herself around Meryl on the other.

There are some notable features thanks to Ms Cruz and her friends – including a collage story from John Galliano about Cruz and her longtime director and close pal, Pedro Almodovar, Cruz taking pics of pals Salma Hayek, Javier Bardem and Sean Penn, a fashion shoot by Steven Meisel with plus size model Crystal Renn (highlighting Renn’s 70′s porn pubes, yes that is true) and Almodovar interview the legendary actress Jeanne Moureau.

Check out the two alternative covers below.

Gap Artist Tees: Support For Bono’s (RED)

The Gap butterfly-tee designed by James Jean

Clothing giant Gap has been teamed up with Bono’s (Product) RED campaign for a few years. The organization works to fight AIDS in Africa and raise awareness throughout the world. For summer, Gap has asked several artists and designers to put their stamp on a tee and fifty percent of the profits will go to The Global Fund. Some of the shirts are making there way to stores and online now, others will show up as autumn approaches. I love the red butterfly (pictured above) by James Jean and the tree branch tee by Nomoco. Grab them (here!) while they last

Evan Rachel Wood Tells Bono To Lighten Up

full_wenn5316117

Actress Evan Rachel Wood had a few suggestions for U2′s, Bono and The Edge when they first met. It seems that she thinks their music is a bit depressing.

I was like, ‘Bono, I know you want to save the world and everything, but in this song you’re talking about poverty and world hunger and it’s Broadway. Can we lighten this up a bit, can I just not sing this?’

“He was like, ‘You’re right, I know, we have to try, we have to try’.?

The girl who once dated Marilyn Manson thinks that Bono and Edge are too depressing?

U2 Learns from Kanye West, Jay-Z

bonojayz

While U2 may be a band that’s so iconic they’ve inspired thousands themselves, they’re not above publicly declaring inspiration from two of hip-hop’s biggest names – Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Learning from West is easy because he has what the rockers call “the whole equation.”

“I think with Kanye, his understanding of what music, about what fashion, about what politics is — they are all each other,” Bono explained. “Understanding the whole equation is understanding where your song sits in the world. Kanye knows where it sits.”

“This is similar for Jay-Z. He just zones in on the text and he hangs onto the text, the words. That’s his life,” Bono said. “I learned that my melodies — because they were more operatic — my melodies were spoiling my chances to use a certain vocabulary.”

Pot, Meet Kettle: Bono Insults Chris Martin!

bono-clinton-global-initiativechris-martin-walking-around

It shouldn’t be any surprise to regular readers that I am no fan of Chris Martin/Coldplay nor Bono/U2. To me, they are two sides of the same annoyingly pretentious coin. So when I read this story last night, I literally laughed until my face hurt.

Seems Bono got on British radio to promote U2′s upcoming album, No Line On The Horizon. Not even two minutes into a live interview, DJ Jo Whiley

asked Bono if he thought that Martin – the husband of actress Gwyneth Paltrow – was as talented as Paul McCartney.

Bono replied: ‘I think he’s that good a melodist, but he’s a w*****.’

For American audiences, those asterisks spell “wanker,” which is apparently serious cussing in England. Whiley was shocked, and asked Bono if he’d like to apologize. Instead, Bono just made things worse:

He said: ‘He’s [Martin] obviously a completely dysfunctional character and a cretin”

Wanker? Cretin? That’s what I’ve been saying about Chris Martin all along, I just haven’t ever had the opportunity to say it on live radio. Even though the irony is astounding, I’ll gladly accept Bono as my mouthpiece.

By the way, Bono eventually did apologize, saying he was “joking.” Sure you were, Bono. Sure you were.

Spider-Man… The Musical?!?!!??

Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark Promo Poster

Shows up and down Broadway are closing daily, but that’s not stopping the producers of a new musical based on Spider-Man from moving forward with their plans.

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark will be directed by Julie Taymor (of The Lion King fame). The book was written by Glen Berger, and the music and lyrics? None other than U-2‘s own Bono and The Edge.

The $40 million effort, reportedly the most expensive Broadway production ever, will make its debut in the Hilton Theatre, the only venue big enough to allow the superhero room to spin his way around the sprawling skyscraper sets while duking it out with various bad guys.

The show will open next February. No cast information is yet available.

What. The. Heck. U-2 and Spider-Man are not two great tastes that go great together! One I love (Spider-Man), and one I cannot stand (U-2). I actually think the idea of a comic book musical is insanely cool – but I can’t stop shaking my head at this one.

New U2 Album Coming Soon!!

We’d heard whisperings that Bono and the boys of U2 were heading back into the studio but who knew they’d be blessing us with a new release so soon? Well, they did.

No Line on the Horizon will be hitting record store shelves March 3rd! The new album recorded all over the world (which began in Fez, Morocco and bounced between their native Ireland, London, and New York) will be the group’s 12th studio album!

Bono’s New Gig: Newspaper Columnist

Bono

As though Bono doesn’t have enough stages on which to flap his jaw, he has now been offered the opportunity to become a columnist for the venerable New York Times. A spokesperson said:

“We have asked Bono to write an occasional column for the paper next year, covering a range of subjects, but are still finalizing the details.”

Bono would write six to ten pieces for the Op-Ed page, focusing on his “longtime pet causes” – Africa and global poverty.

If he were paid for the gig (and that’s not clear yet), the funds would be donated directly to his charity.

In my opinion, this is the newspaper version of stunt casting. Is the Times that desperate for readership?
