‘Cars 2′ Races to the Top

Cars 2 was the #1 movie this past weekend (June 24-26, 2011) making $66.1 million despite poor reviews. Bad Teacher, the new comedy starring Cameron Diaz, came in second with $31.6 million. All the prior releases dropped just a slot each other than Kung Fu Panda 2 which dropped to #10, obviously because of Cars 2 being the new animated kids film. Nothing else opened in the top ten this week.

‘Green Lantern’ Wins, But Not Big

Green Lantern was the number one movie in the box office this past weekend (June 17-19, 2011) with a mere $53.1 million, not a great opening for a movie with a $200 million budget. Not to mention the movie was pretty bad, so it’s not going to do well in coming weeks. In the #2 slot in it’s second week Super 8 made another $21.4 million. Coming in at #3 was the new Jim Carrey family movie Mr. Popper’s Penguins with $18.4 million. Nothing Else opened in the top ten this week.

‘Super 8′ Dominates Weekend

Super 8 was the #1 movie this past weekend (June 10-12, 2011) making $35.5 million. Not the most amazing opening ever, but it will continue to make money in coming weeks. Word of mouth goes a long way and this movie is really good. X-Men: First Class dropped to the second slot but still did well in it’s second week with $24.1 million. New kids movie Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer opened in the #7 slot with only $6 million.

‘X-Men: First Class’ Tops Box Office

This past weekend’s (June 3-5, 2011) number one movie was X-Men: First Class which made $55.1 million, which isn’t bad, but falls short of all the other X-Men movies ever released. It’s arguably the best X-Men film yet, so hopefully it’ll make up for the relatively low opening it in coming weeks. Nothing else opened in the top ten this week, every other movie just moved down a rank.

‘The Hangover Part II’ Breaks All Time Comedy Record with $138.1 Million!

The Hangover Part II had an astounding holiday weekend, it broke the record for any comedy in history opening with a projected $138.1 million!

Shattering numerous records, Warner Bros.’ The Hangover Part II grossed $118.1 million in its first four days to help fuel the best Memorial Day weekend in history at the domestic box office. The sequel is expected to gross another $20 million on Monday for a staggering five-day bow of $138.1 million, setting a new benchmark for comedies.

I can’t say that I’m surprised, the first movie was great. Everyone was expecting a continuation of the surprising and hilarious first movie. I saw it, and while it was funny, it was pretty much a direct copy of the first. I’m sure it’ll continue to go well in coming weeks with it’s over-the-top foul and disgusting humor. This pretty much guarantees The Hangover Part III. Hopefully Part III will have a more original story than this one.

‘The Hangover Part II’ Sets Midnight Opening Record with $10.4 Million!

The Hangover Part II had the biggest opening of any R-rated movie in history for a midnight opening last night.

This Memorial Weekend started early for the 2011 Summer Movie Season with both Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures’ The Hangover Part 2 and DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 distributed by Paramount screening Thursday midnight shows. Warner Bros is saying that Hangover Part 2, one of the most anticipated sequels of the summer, opened after midnight in 2,600 locations with $10.4 million. That’s a big big number and sets the record for the highest grossing R-rated midnight show. (The previous record was Paranormal Activity’s $6.3M.)

I’m not surprised, this movie s bound to be a huge success. This marks the true beginning of the summer movie season, both The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2 are going to do extremely well this Memorial Day weekend. The Hangover Part II probably won’t be #1 over KFP2, but that’s due to it’s lack of 3D pricing and it’s R-rating.

‘Pirates: On Stranger Tides’ Sails to the Top

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opened in the #1 slot this past weekend (May 20-22, 2011) with a solid $90.1 million! Bridesmaids stayed strong in it’s second week raking in another $20.9 million keeping it in the #2 slot. Thor slid to #3 in it’s third week with $15.5 million. The only brand new release that even landed in the top ten was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I’m sure it will continue to do well in coming weeks, it’s a much better movie than the last two.

‘Thor’ Holds Box Office Throne, ‘Bridesmaids’ Scores

Thor stayed the #1 movie in the box office this past weekend (May 13-15, 2011) with $34.7 million. In second place was the hilarious new comedy Bridesmaids with $26.2 million. The #3 slot went to Fast Five which made another #20.4 million in it’s third week. Priest floundered, opening in the #4 slot with only $14.9 million. Not good for a movie with a $60 million budget.

The other movies that opened this weekend didn’t fare so well. Disney’s Prom opened at #5 with $4.7 million. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil opened at #6 with 4.1 million and nothing else opened in the top ten.
