Bea Arthur died in April, but even after her death she is doing good.  The Golden Girl’s estate just granted $300,000 to the Ali Forney Center in New York City.  The Center runs “emergency and transitional housing as well as health and family programs for at risk LGBT teens and young adults.”

Bea’s gift will be used to purchase a building that will house 12 additional youth.  It will be named in her honor.

What a generous contribution!

Charlize Theron helped the charity ONEXONE big time last week!  She appeared at the group’s gala event and live auction at Bimbo’s in San Francisco and raised bucks - and temperatures.

The actress initially put a trip to South Africa (complete with 2010 World Cup tickets, a meeting with Nelson Mandela, and a safari) on the auction block.  Unsatisifed with the bids, which stalled at $37,000, Charlize threw in a kiss.   That did the trick:  a female attendee bid $140,000 - outbidding a male attendee by $5,000 - for the right to smooch Charlize.

Way to go!  ONEXONE works to improve the overall health and living conditions of children in living in poor countries.  They’ve got lots of celebrity support, including that of Ben Affleck.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are famous for their global philanthropic efforts, but they’ve recently decided to bring it on home.  The couple, along with Brad’s family, have made a $1 million donation to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

The funds will help the hospital to expand the hospital’s cancer treatment programs, and

will help establish an endowment fund to pay children’s cancer specialists. The donation will also help the hospital build a new pediatric unit, as well as double the size of its neonatal and pediatric intensive care units.

Brad was raised in Springfield.  The unit will be renamed the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center, in honor of Brad’s mother.

How generous!  I personally think this kind of philanthropy is more meaningful than all the money they give overseas.  And what a way to honor his mom.  Bravo, Brangelina!

Avril Lavigne attended the 16th annual Race to Erase MS Gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City.   Is it just me, or is she finally looking pregnant for reals?  Or is it the dress?  Which I pretty much love, by the way, but the belt does kind of cut poor little Avril in the middle.  I dunno.  Her boobs look rather larger than normal too… and there was the whole baggy hoodie fixation last month.

Is Madonna trying to repair her image after her emotional outburst in Malawi last week?

The Material Girl made a “substantial” donation to aid victims of yesterday’s 6.3 earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy.  The quake left at least 200 people dead and 50,000 homeless.  Her publicist would not assign an exact dollar figure to the donation, but rumor has it that it’s in the range of $500,000.

“I am happy to lend a helping hand to the town that my ancestors are from,” Madonna said in a statement. “My heart goes out to the families that have lost loved ones or their homes.”

Madonna’s connection to the area is quite personal:  her grandparents lived in a town near the epicenter of the earthquake.    But part of me has to wonder if she is just trying to prove to the Malawian people what a good, good person she is, and what a great parent she’d be to one of their own.  It’s just hard to take her at face value.

Generous Denzel Washington is a savior - literally!  He made a donation recently that helped the Roswell (New Mexico) Boys & Girls Club keep its doors open.

While he was filming his new movie The Book Of Eli, he learned that “the establishment was in danger of closing due to financial woes.”   He immediately made a $50,000 gift, and encouraged local residents to donate another $5,000.

This is a cause near and dear to Denzel’s heart:  he is the spokesman for the Boys & Girls Club.    I always admire celebrities who put their money where their mouth is!

Nicole Richie was glowing - just like a pregnant woman should - at a private cocktail party for the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation.

She looks incredible, doesn’t she? Her hippie-inspired dress flows so well over her itty bitty baby belly, and the colors are just awesome - so rich and very different from the other gowns celebs are wearing right now.

Elizabeth Hurley is participating in a unique campaign to support a domestic violence prevention charity in England.

She and model-slash-heiress Jasmine Guiness have donated family photos which will be made into limited-edition postage stamps.  The stamps will be auctioned on eBay, and the funds raised will go to the organization Women’s Aid.

Hurley contributed photos of her six year old son, Damien.   She said:

‘The images I have chosen mean a lot to me as a mother and it is great that my photography can be used in a way that benefits others.’

I think this is a very cool idea.  Bravo to Elizabeth for getting involved!

Salma Hayek helped launch year two of UNICEF’s One Pack = One Vaccine campaign at a press conference in New York earlier this week.

The program is a collaboration between UNICEF and Pampers.� Each pack of specially marked Pampers diapers and wipes purchased in the U.S. or Canada through May 1st will lead to a donation of one tetanus vaccine to help UNICEF protect a pregnant woman in the developing world against the disease.

The campaign has already helped raise funds for 45 million tetanus vaccines.� This year’s goal is at least 30 million.

Caryl Stern, president and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, said:

“We are grateful that Pampers has chosen to partner with us again and are thankful for the efforts of Salma Hayek and her dedication to this important cause.�

Awesome work, Salma!� Good for you for being part of this great effort.

Lost star Evangeline Lilly is the latest celebrity to both start a clothing line and support a pet charity project.� In fact, she’s killing both those birds with one stone.

Lilly has started a lingerie line called R*Favela, which is made in Brazil.� The items are sold on eBay and all proceeds go to support a nonprofit called Task Brazil.� This charity

provides housing, aid and guidance to children and teens living on the streets of the South American nation.

Lilly says:

“Here on eBay I’m offering beautiful, Brazilian-made lingerie as a fun, enticing way for you to not only invest in yourself but in the poor and abandoned children of Brazil.”

Good for you, Evangeline!� Who would have thought the LiveLinks girl would someday be able to do so much good for the world?

One of our favorite celebrities we love to hate was out in the Bronx, New York doing some good.� Yes, Heather Mills was working on her karma (we all know it needs a LOT of work) by hosting a healthy cooking day for the families of the Bronx, following on from her commitment of $1 million in vegan food to the Hunts Point Alliance for Children.

I give Heather Mills kudos for this good work.� She might be Paul McCartney’s mortal enemy, but I think she made some new friends out of all those kids. You can’t say anything bad about a woman out there helping out children and families that are in need.

Heather, you have done a good thing and I hope you continue to do so even when you have met your $1 million goal.� I think good karma is heading your way!

On Wednesday’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno Scarlett Johansson was complaining that she caught a cold from The Spirit co-star, Samuel L Jackson. So Jay Leno being the brilliant guy said that the cold was made by two great people and must be worth something so he is decided to sell the tissue that Scarlett used on the show on ebay for charity. Scarlett picked the charity USA Harvest.

Scarlett, being the good sport she is, put the tissue in a Ziploc bag and signed the bag. I have been keeping an eye on the bidding and I can’t even get over that it’s over $4000 now. I can only imagine…no wait, I can’t…what that tissue will be used for. Who would want someone’s old tissue anyways? I can’t even handle looking at my own used ones!

Anne Hathaway gave a surprise holiday treat at the Cracked X-Mas Fundraiser in Los Angeles last night.� She put herself up on the auction block to benefit the Trevor Project, a crisis helpline for LGBT youth.

Three lucky attendees together bid $12,000 for a date with the gorgeous actress

“…for drinks somewhere fabulous and basically get you totally s— faced. Tell me what I’m worth.”

And tell her they did, although she was a little amazed at the results:

Hathaway, 26, was embarrassed when her price kept going up. “I’m blushing,” Hathaway said during the bidding process. “Wow, I feel really good right now.”

She should feel good!� I’m surprised that the winning bid wasn’t even more than $12K, though.� They should have invited more deep pockets to the event!
