‘Modern Family’ Actress Sarah Hyland Had A Kidney Transplant In April

Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland has revealed she underwent a kidney transplant operation in April.

The 21 year-old was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia when she was 9 years-old and told Seventeen magazine’s June issue that her father donated one of his kidneys to help his daughter’s health.

“You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what,” Hyland told the magazine. “My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney!”

“But it’s also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you’re friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who’s there for me and who’s not.”

Hyland said she received a lot of support from everyone including her boyfriend Matt Prokop.

She’s working with the Lopez Foundation, the organization set up by actor George Lopez, as a youth ambassador working with underprivileged youth and expanding awareness of kidney disease.

“I think it’s really great because it gives kids opportunities they wouldn’t normally have and I’ve had experiences like that in my life, so it’s really close to my heart.”

Despite the illness and the medications she’s now on, Hyland’s outlook is always sunny.

“I have a second chance at life – not a lot of people get that,” she said.

The June/July issue of Seventeen, featuring Hyland on the cover, is on sale May 22nd.

Demi Moore Checks Out Of Rehab

Demi Moore has been in rehab on a little break at Cirque Lodge following her little episode in January, but it’s time for her to rejoin the real world.  Radar Online reports that she’s checked out of rehab, where she was being treated for an eating disorder and addiction to Adderall.

Don’t expect to see her around Hollywood any time soon, though.  She’s continuing her rest and relaxation while on vacation “in an undisclosed location.”    Hopefully she’s taking it easy and continuing to get well.

Demi Moore Smoked Fake Drugs, Seeks ‘Spiritual Counseling’

Demi Moore

Demi Moore is out of the hospital after her 911 call to the emergency room, and more details have emerged about what put her there in the first place.

While sources say that she had been doing nitrous oxide and was treated accordingly at the hospital, the 911 recording reveals more. The caller said that Moore

“…smoked something –- it’s not marijuana, but it’s similar to, it’s similar to incense -– and she appears to be having convulsions of some sort.”

Many have speculated that what she smoked was “spice,” a synthetic drug that mimics the effects of marijuana.

Assuming this is true, you’ve just got to wonder why a celebrity like Demi Moore would bother taking fake drugs.  She’s got plenty of money to buy whatever she wants, and plenty of people to go out and get it for her, so…seriously?

Although it’s unclear whether Moore is actually in a rehab center being treated for “exhaustion” as her rep stated, E! Online reported yesterday that she’s receiving “spiritual counseling.”   She’s been a longtime student of  Kabbalah, so perhaps that’s where she’s turning at this time.

Demi Moore Entering Treatment For ‘Exhaustion’

Demi Moore

Following an emergency trip to the hospital on Monday night, Demi Moore is seeking treatment for exhaustion and stress, says her rep.

People quotes the rep’s statement:

“Because of the stresses in her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health…She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family and friends.”

TMZ‘s sources say that “professional assistance” actually means “rehab” and “exhaustion and stress” actually means “substance abuse.”  I suppose sufficient substance abuse would, in fact, lead to exhaustion and stress, so perhaps those are perfectly apt euphemisms.

Moore announced she was filing for divorce from her husband Ashton Kutcher in November 2011.

Giuliana Rancic Opens Up About Double Mastectomy Surgery

Giuliana Rancic

Faced with a diagnosis of breast cancer, E! TV host Giuliana Rancic elected to have a double mastectomy two weeks ago.  On Friday, she opened up to The Today Show‘s Matt Lauer about her surgery experience and her recovery.

“I knew this was going to be a tough surgery, but I in no way want to minimize it.  Yes, I’m two and a half weeks out, but up until a week and a half ago it was hell. It was horrible.”

Rancic explained that she had a bad reaction to the drugs given to her to minimize her pain.

“I went into surgery at 4 PM and got out around 9:30 PM.  By 4 AM I had to get off the morphine because I was so sick and I thought to myself, ‘[If you throw up] you have to engage all of your chest muscles,’ and I just had my chest operated on.”

She admits she has been relying heavily on her husband, Bill Rancic, to help her following the operation.

“I can’t really turn much to put my seatbelt on.  He has to help me get in and out of bed, get dressed…it’s a lot of limited mobility and pain.”

Despite it all, she continues to stay positive, saying that now she’s “feeling great.”

Gerard Butler On The Mend After Surfing Accident

The treacherous waves of Half Moon Bay in Northern California held Gerard Butler underwater on Sunday and sent the actor to the hospital after his brush with the deadly currents.

Butler, 42, was on the water filming Of Men and Mavericks when he was struck by a large set of waves that broke and held the actor under for two large wave cycles, crashing him into some rocks.

Pro surfers Greg Long, Zach Wormhoudt and Peter Mei were also with Butler, paddling out to sea on their boards. The group was trying to avoid a set of 15 foot waves when the next set broke in front of them.

Butler was rescued by a safety patrol on a jet-ski and brought to Stanford Medical Center for observation.

“He had that 100-yard stare that surfers get after a two-wave hold-down or near-death experience,” ESPN writer Frank Quiarte reported.

Butler was released and will make a full recovery.

The Mavericks, as the waves are known, are a very dangerous set and have killed or given near-death experiences to many seasoned surfers.

Of Men and Mavericks is the Hollywood production based on surfer Jay Moriarty’s life.

Giuliana Rancic Recovering After Double Mastectomy

Giuliana Rancic is recovering and “doing well” after undergoing surgery on Tuesday.

The E! News host had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery performed this week after radiation treatment and lumpectomies failed to eradicate her breast cancer.

Rancic’s cancer was discovered when she was asked by her fertility doctor to take a precautionary breast exam earlier this year as part of the in vitro fertilization pre-screening process.

Her husband, Bill Rancic told E! News his wife was progressing well after the operation.

“G is doing really well,” he said. “Her surgery lasted about four hours and the doctors were very pleased with the result.”

Although he said she felt more pain than expected, Bill said she’s “already cracking jokes.”

Giuliana has tried to maintain a positive attitude throughout her illness and hopes to have better self-steem by the end.

‘Mastectomy’ the word seemed so scary to me at first. After doing research and seeing the advancements, the surgery has come a long way from 20 years ago,”she said.

“The results can be incredible. Not only can it save your life, but you can come out feeling healthier and with a positive self-image.”
