‘Dark Knight’ Re-Release Cancelled

The re-release of the mega-hit The Dark Knight planned for January has been Cancelled.

In September, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures was planning to rerelease The Dark Knight in theaters in January. We have learned that is no longer the case.

Warner Bros. Pictures domestic distribution president Dan Fellman had acknowledged in September that talks were taking place with IMAX executives about the prospect of restoring the film to some number of giant-screen venues in January. It was uncertain whether The Dark Knight would also reappear in conventional theaters.

The movie would have easily passed the $1 Billion mark had the plans come to fruition. It’s a shame, I really wanted to go see it again at the IMAX.

These are the first official images from the hotly anticipated 1930s crime drama starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale Public Enemies. The film is directed by Michael Mann and also stars up-and-comer Channing Tatum of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

Described as a sort of Heat II, the film tells the story of charismatic criminal gang leader John Dillinger (Depp) and determined lawman Melvin Purvis (Bale), the FBI agent tracking him down.

Also in the cast is Marion Cotillard as Dillinger’s girlfriend, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, Leelee Sobieski and Emilie de Ravin, with Billy Crudup as the legendary J. Edgar.

Batman Sued by Batman

The mayor of the city of Batman, Turkey is suing Warner Brothers and Christopher Nolan after the success of The Dark Knight

The mayor of an oil-producing city in southeastern Turkey, which has the same name as the Caped Crusader, is suing helmer Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. for royalties from mega-grosser ”The Dark Knight.”

Huseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of Batman, has accused “The Dark Knight” producers of using the city’s name without permission.

“There is only one Batman in the world,” Kalkan said. “The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.”

No one from the town of Batman has explained why it took so many years to take legal action. Batman first appeared as a comicbook character in 1939 and the”Batman” TV series started in 1966. Tim Burton’s first bigscreen rendition for Warner Bros. came out in 1989. Undoubtedly the fact that “Dark Knight” is about to pass the $1 billion mark at the B.O. played a part in stirring the ire of the Turkish hamlet.

Seriously? Come on now people, this seems more than a little ridiculous. What do you think? Click your opinion in the poll below!

Christopher Nolan Talks ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel

Christopher Nolan sat down with the LA Times to talk about the his future with the Batman Franchise, and if he will direct the sequel to The Dark Knight

GB: Watching “The Dark Knight,” it’s very easy to imagine the Joker returning to Gotham, the way his fate remains unresolved. When you were writing the film, did you anticipate that the Joker would be back in the third film?

NOLAN: No, really and in truth, I only deal with one film at a time. I find myself sort of protesting this issue a lot. We’ve never attempted to save anything for a sequel or set up anything for a sequel. That seems improbable to some people because, particularly with “Batman Begins,” the film ended with a particular hook [with Jim Gordon showing Batman a Joker playing card announcing the arrival of a new villain in town]. But for me that was just about the excitement of people leaving the theater with the sense that now we have the character up and running. I wanted people to walk away with that sense in their head. You know, that he’s become the Batman in the movie. That’s why we had the title come up at the end, because it was “Batman Begins,” and it was all very specific to that.

Then I got excited about seeing where that character would go. It was planned in advance, but it followed in that way. But we tried our hardest to really do everything in this movie that we would want to see the Joker do and to get that in the fabric of the story as much as possible. We wanted the Joker’s final taunt to Batman to be that they are locked in an ongoing struggle because of Batman’s rules. There’s a paradox there. Batman won’t kill. And the Joker is not interested in completely defeating Batman because he’s fascinated by him and he enjoys sparring with him. It’s trapped both of them. That was really the meaning of it. Of course what happened is Heath created the most extraordinary character that you would love to see 10 movies about. That’s the bittersweet thing. It was incredible characterization. It is a bittersweet thing for all of us.

GB: After the massive, military-level operation of making “Dark Knight,” is there part of you leaning toward a smaller, more nimble sort of production next?

NOLAN: On one hand, yeah, there is a certain feeling to do that. After “Batman Begins,” I certainly felt like taking on something smaller, but one of the things I got such a thrill from on “The Dark Knight” was shooting on Imax and creating that massive scale and achieving that larger-than-life quality. So that’s a lot of fun. I’m drawn in both directions now. So maybe what I need to do next is a very intimate, small story that happens to be photographed on a ridiculously large scale. Or vice versa [laughs].

GB: I’m not sure I even know what that means.

NOLAN: Yes, I don’t know what it means either [laughter]. But really what I know is that it’s about story at the end of the day. … But I do feel there is this tug to do big scale and small scale, so I don’t know. …

GB: Maybe you need to make a small story in a huge place. “My Dinner With Andre” at the top of Mt. Everest.

NOLAN: Or in outer space. That might work.

GB: Could you see actually yourself not making the third Batman film?

NOLAN: Well … let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven’t been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.

I think the studio will offer him enough money, and eventually that great story will emerge. If anyone can make the third movie great, it’ll be him.

McG Talks ‘Terminator Salvation’ Effects

McG, director of the upcoming Terminator Salvation talks about the progress of the film.

The Future So Far…

We wrapped principal photography. Now we’re heavy into post. I’ve already shown early cuts to Christian and Sam. They seem pleased with where the film is headed. Our focus is on story and character, but it’s fun diving into the world of visual effects.

It feels like the responsibility of any Terminator film to reinvent the wheel of effects with every outing. The first movie was a stunning achievement in animatronics and practical effects from Stan Winston. The second film brought us liquid metal, which was a true revolution in the effects world. Robert Patrick’s (T-1000) head coming apart and putting itself back together again looks as good today as ever.

Charlie Gibson is aware of his responsibility as the VFX supervisor and second unit director of this film. He works with ILM and Asylum every day and makes revisions to the finest detail. We want the patina of the machines to be dirty and heavy and perfectly realistic - that’s why we built so much practically with Stan Winston. But at some point the effects kick in and like any Terminator fan, Charlie wants his mind blown. There’s one sequence in particular where we’re trying to achieve something that’s never been done before. I don’t want to talk about it because we haven’t been successful yet…

But we’re working on it.

It’s very interesting working with Conrad Buff every day. First of all he was the editor on Terminator 2 so it’s very comforting having his steady hand at the Avid. Long before we ever began we talked about what excited us about making this film. It was the notion of the world after judgment day. We set out to create a world that honored the Terminator mythology but was its own new beginning. Every day I learn from Conrad as he makes the elegant choices of a disciplined filmmaker. It feels great to have his confidence in the movie. I take his opinion very seriously, he provides a daily litmus test for what is worthy of a Terminator film.

Most importantly, Christian and Sam bring power to the rolls of John Connor and Marcus Wright. This is a story of two destinies colliding. Connor is part of a resistance comprised of the ethnicities that make up the globe. This film is so much more that just Los Angeles. It reflects the global crisis of man, all of man versus machine.

McG

Looking forward to seeing how this one turns out in the end.

Barack Obama Voted Most Influential Male

Barack Obama has been named the most influential male by AskMen.com. They asked 200,000 people who they thought influenced the way men behave, buy and think. Barack came in number one and John McCain came in number 10.  Here is the top ten list in order.

Barack Obama, Democratic nominee
Steve Jobs, Apple CEO
Michael Phelps, Olympic swimmer
Robert Downey Jr., actor
Stephen Colbert, TV show host
Gordon Ramsay, celebrity chef and star of Kitchen Nightmares
Christian Bale, aka Batman
Rob Kay, Rock Band lead designer
Cristiano Ronaldo, soccer phenomenon

Most of these men are known for politics. It’s interesting to see that politics has come to gossip blogs and things like that. It’s about time things like this make people want to do something about their future.

‘Dark Knight’ Sequel Secures Christopher Nolan?

Christopher Nolan, director of MomentoThe PrestigeMementoBatman Begins and The Dark Knight seems to be back for the third new Batman film.

Despite rumors to the contrary, it looks like Christopher Nolan may now indeed be signed to direct a sequel to The Dark Knight. The newest edition of Production Weekly went out this morning, and they list Nolan as the official director of Batman 3, along with Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman in the cast.

Great news, hopefully he and his brother are working on the new script. I can’t imagine another movie in the series topping The Dark Knight. Time will tell. I could be starting pre-production as soon as February ‘09.

‘Dark Knight’ Sequel Starting up in February?

Looks like the studio is ready to get the ball rolling on the sequel to The Dark Knight.

The word is, that the sequel to The Dark Knight could shoot as soon as next year.

According to not one but two reports at Batman-on-Film.com, behind the scenes sources have informed BoF that pre-production on the next Bat-film is slated to begin around next February in Chicago for a summer ‘09 shoot.

“What’s interesting is that info seems to be originating from folks who worked on TDK behind the scenes — set builders, stuntmen, film crew, etc. — in Chicago,” BoF said. “As far as this buzz coming from former TDK crew members, there’s probably something to this as you can’t hire these guys at the very last minute. If sets need to be built and other miscellaneous pre-preproduction projects need to get done, I suspect that readying these things a year and a half/two years in advance is NOT out of the question.”

The sooner the better, I just hope Christopher Nolan will be onboard to direct the next one. He’s responsible for breathing life back into the Batman franchise.

Arnold was joined by wife Maria Shriver and Bale was with his wife Sibi Blazic.

So does this mean there is going to be a cameo from Arnold Schwarzenegger in the upcoming Terminator Salvation? Could be, but since the main photography happened in New Mexico, and this image was taken in Brentwood California, it’s more likely that there might be an Arnie voice over bit in the film. We’ll have to wait and see!

‘The Dark Knight’ Will be Re-Released in January

The studio wants the film to get oscars, so they are going to re-release it in January during academy awards voting season.

“It’s just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people,” a studio insider said.

To date, “Dark Knight” has rung up about $512 million domestically and $440 million internationally, including more than $55 million in Imax grosses. A pre-Oscars re-release would help assure its topping $1 billion worldwide, and any traction with nominations or wins would likely mean even greater boxoffice.

No doubt, this film should get some awards. Warner Brothers is showing off how good they are with financial planning.

No Penguin in ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel?

Philip Seymour Hoffman spoke about being cast in the upcoming ‘Dark Knight’ sequel that hasn’t even been written yet.

The rumored casting of Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin was said to be confirmed by Alfred himself Michael Caine while in Toronto.
So is it true? MTV went straight to the source and asked Hoffman himself, he says no.

“No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.”

If he’s officially offered the role I’m sure he’ll take it gladly, but I repeat, the film hasn’t even been written yet. Him being in it or not is pure speculation. But rumors like this catch the eyes of the movie moguls.

Johnny Depp Confirmed for ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel?

Well, it’s not a sure thing but Execs at Warner Bros. are clearly hoping Christopher Nolan goes that route. Check out what Michael Caine said:

Caine tells MTV that he asked a Warner Bros. executive, “How the hell are we going to top Heath?” He was told, “I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.”

I don’t know if it’s possible to top Heath Ledger as Joker, but that combination certainly at least gives you a shot Except I don’t really see this as any sort of casting confirmation. The unnamed WB exec never actually said they had them or were even pursuing them, it sounds more like he was simply spouting off about one of the potential ideas they’re bandying around. If WB’s executives are smart though, they’ll stop dreaming up casting combinations and sit on their hands until Nolan decides what he wants to do. Once Nolan decides he wants to do it, they should continue sitting on their hands and let him do whatever the hell he wants.

It’s just a waiting game at this point, I certainly hope Nolan isn’t pressured by the studio too much.
