Chris Martin Tapped To Write, Perform Official Theme Song Of 2012 London Olympics

Anyone who’s read my posts here at Backseat Cuddler for awhile knows by now that Coldplay is one of my least favorite bands in, like, the world, and, like, of all time.  Harsh, I know.  So it should be no surprise that the fact that frontman Chris Martin has been asked to write the official theme song of the 2012 Olympics in London has me asking, “My god, why??”

Well, no, I’m not really asking why, because it’s not so hard to figure out.  They are a major British act, they are young (but not too young), they’re wildly popular (for some reason), people love them (except me), Chris is married to Gwyneth Paltrow who despite her annoying nature is also much beloved.  OK, probably not so much that last one.  (But can anyone tell me how you go from magazine covers like this … to THIS… in just a few short years?   Is this what living the GOOP life does for a woman? No thanks.)   But don’t believe me.  Believe the sources who say:

“Chris is at the top of the list to front the official record. He’s a huge star and a British musical icon, with an international profile. We’re pulling out all the stops to get hold of him, ideally with the rest of Coldplay involved, too.

Coldplay are the biggest stadium rockers in Britain today, and their style of anthemic music would be perfect for the Olympics. It needs to be something inspirational. The hope is that they would perform at the opening ceremony, as well as [produce] the track, which could help fund good causes.”

Well, actually, that is kind of what I already said.

Also on the short list for the opening ceremony are Muse (cool), Joss Stone (love, but really, the Olympics?), and David Albarns of Gorillaz (I got nothin’).

The London Olympics will be held July 27-August 12, 2012.

Coldplay Tapped for “Sherlock Holmes” Theme?

martin_0804

Sources (and by sources – in this case, I’m referencing The Times of India) are reporting that Robert Downey Jr. has an interest in lining up Coldplay to perform the theme song for his new Sherlock Holmes movie.  Not that he has the power to do so (that honor will likely go to those with producing credits), but still an interesting thought to make a blockbuster out of this retelling.

Downey Jr., 44, believes that Martin, 32, will be the right person for the musical score, as the rocker is a huge fan of the super sleuth.

The actor also revealed that the singer has been offering him tips about playing Holmes on the big screen, and that he hopes Martin will be a part of Guy Ritchie’s much-anticipated movie.

“We are hoping Chris Martin of Coldplay will contribute to our score,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“He’s a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. He told me you need to be really skinny, which is always the last thing you want to hear,” he added.

Joe Satriani Suing Coldplay

Guitarist Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for a more legit example of plagiarism (sorry Ashlee) when it comes to the case of “Viva La Vida” vs. “If I Could Fly”. You could spend your time listening to the full songs of both artists’, but you’d probably be wasting your time. The arrangements are different enough that Chris Martin and crew will likely skirt by, avoiding Satriani’s desired obtainment of “any and all profits” made by “Viva La Vida”. Check out the video, and while some user comments posted below the clip here allege that the pitch was adjusted by the video’s creator, it’s interesting nonetheless.

Do lawsuits like this even help the artist in the long run? Either way, Satriani’s taking it pretty seriously – claiming it was like a “dagger through my heart”, alleging that the tune was written for his wife after close to 10 years of nurturing– the song, not his wife. T.M.I.

Ashlee Simpson Plaigarizes Coldplay?

While it’s unlikely the two pop forces will ever officially collaborate, a savvy music listener (I call anyone who actually listened closely to Ashlee Simpson‘s latest effort savvy) has found some pretty obvious similarities between Coldplay‘s “Square One” and Pete Wentz‘s baby momma’s “Eyes Wide Open” (gah, even the name is wretched!). Sampling? Possible – but both artist’s liner notes cite completely seperate producers and arrangers.

Check out the video and judge for yourself!

The 2008 Grammy Award Noms Are In!!

Lil’ Wayne is having THE GREATEST YEAR OF HIS LIFE! The Cash Money rapper lead the pack of musicians-nominated with 8 nominations of his own. Coming in second is Coldplay with 7 noms, followed by Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Ne-Yo each earning 6.

Also impressive were nominations scored by Adele (who received nods for Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year – for “Chasing Pavements”) and Rihanna for Best Dance Recording (for “Disturbia”), Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals (for her collaboration with Maroon 5 “If I Never See You Again”) and Best Long-Form Music Video.

Jason Mraz got a surprising nod for “I’m Yours” in the Song of the Year category, alongside Pink for “So What” who was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Favorites of mine Kings of Leon, M.I.A. and Lady Gaga were also nominated.

Check out the full list of nominees below!

VIDEO PREMIERE: Coldplay & Jay-Z – “Lost!(+)”

Super group Coldplay‘s newest single making its rounds on radio, “Lost+” has recently been revamped from its Viva La Vida style, courtesy of a Jay-Z verse, and a video to match.

Check out Chris Martin and his good friend Jigga in this impressive collaboration.

Alicia Keys & Coldplay Lead AMA Nominations

Whether a fan or not, there was little escape from Alicia Keys‘ “No One” this year. Appropriately so, the singer/songwriter/actress leads the list of nominees for the 2008 American Music Awards with 5 nominations alongside Coldplay, who snagged 4.

Keys strikes nods for artist of the year, favorite female artist– pop or rock music, favorite female artist– soul/rhythm & blues, and favorite album for each for her multi-platinum-selling As I Am.

Coldplay ranks among those up for artist of the year, favorite band, duo, or group– pop or rock music, favorite artist– alternative rock music, and favorite album (for Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends).

Other artists who were nominated today were The Eagles (who also scored 4 nods for artist of the year, favorite band, duo, or group– pop or rock music, favorite artist– adult contemporary music, and favorite album– pop or rock), Lil’ Wayne, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey, Daughtry, Flo Rida (really?), Rihanna, Carrie Underwood, Usher, and Kanye West.

Airing on ABC, check for the 2008 AMA’s November 28th live from LA’s the Nokia Theatre, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Coldplay Releasing New EP, Collaborating with Jay-Z

Posted on their website last week via a handwritten note by frontman Chris Martin, Coldplay announced plans to release an EP of unreleased material from Viva La Vida, called Prospekt’s March. The 8-track collection comes with a remix to “Lost” called “Lost +” and features a “guest experience in the form of Jay-Z” (such an ill way of saying “featuring”, no?). The anxiously-awaited release will make its debut November 25th. I’m such a Coldplay fan, so this is definitely something for me to get excited over.

The track listing via Capitol records:

1. “Life in Technicolor ii”
2. “Postcards From Far Away”
3. “Glass of Water”
4. “Rainy Day”
5.”Prospekt’s March/ Poppyfields”
6. “Lost +” (Jay-Z remix)
7.”Lovers in Japan” (Osaka Sun mix)
8. “Now My Feet Won’t Touch the Ground”

Chris Martin and The Burger King: Separated At Birth??

In Coldplay‘s new video Viva La Vida, Chris Martin dresses up like the Burger King. Is he trying to tell us something? May be he is thinking about a Whopper the whole time, although they are pretty gross! Listen to it and tell me what you think…

This song is a cover…who covers their own cover?

Nas & “Mamma Mia” Make a Lil’ Wayne Sandwich

The marketing force behind Nas‘ self-(or Untitled)-album may have been lukewarm (and a bit misguided I might add), but it didn’t stop the rap pioneer & Queens NY native from topping this past week’s Billboard charts, knocking Lil’ Wayne‘s The Carter III from atop its reigning spot. The Def Jam signee tops the charts with 186,000 units sold, while Weezy still brings in devastating numbers at 105,500.

The soundtrack to that damn movie with some singing old lady Mamma Mia!i slipped onto the charts at number 3 with 91,400 units moved, barely topping Coldplay‘s Viva La Vida at #4 with 90,300 more sales.

Check out more of last week’s big sellers here. And yes, Rihanna is still making a whole helluva lot more paper than you and I combined with her expanded Good Girl Gone Bad selling yet another 41,300 copies (which has been on the charts since its release last Spring!)
