A Brief History of “The Monster Mash”

Chances are that the majority of those reading this don’t know me in person - so appropriately enough, it’s only fair that I disclaim one thing: I’m an unabashed fan of Halloween and the scary movies, and downright bizarre music that tag along with the last day of October (my Mom’s even born on the holiday!).

So I thought it could be a nice break from the regular, up-to-the-minute posts of the happenings of celebrity, movie, and music culture that BSC brings you daily, to introduce you to some of Halloween’s most familiar theme songs.

First up? The classic (and arguably the biggest) of them all - 1962’s novelty song “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett.

From My Death Bed

If you live on the East Coast, you know there’s a pretty strong cold going around. It’s more contagious than a Jonas Brothers song, and your boy DJ Sidekick has officially been infected. Sorry for the lack of music updates, but thanks to Dayquil, and some stiff chai tea, I’ll be sure to bring you the latest on last week’s new music rush (beginning of the official 4th quarter) and this week’s new releases & reviews.

But for now, as most germ-infected appreciate, here’s a little chicken noodle soup (with a soda on the side).

Phish Reunite For First Time Since Break-Up

Birkenstock-wearers worldwide are rejoicing today at the news that Phish (a band that arguably has the coolest logo next to The Grateful Dead) reunited this weekend for the first time since breaking up four years ago. The occasion? Former road manager Brad Sands’ wedding, sparking a rather impromptu performance.

The performance has sent hippie bloggers & music fans alike into a whirlwind of speculation that the group is planning a permanent reunion after member Trey Anastasio’s comments to Rolling Stone in May that he would “give my left nut to play [Phish’s “You Enjoy Myself”] five times in a row every day until I die.”

Christina or Kanye: Who Had the Better VMA Performance?

Fortunately there were some highlights about last night’s MTV Video Music Awards– NEW MUSIC! If you tuned in, and you made it towards the later portion of the show, you saw both Christina Aguilera and Kanye West perform brand new material from their upcoming projects. Both were amazing. I’d have to say Kanye wins for me (as I reported on my other blog, it was the most gut-wrenchingly humble performance I’d ever seen from the ego maniac), but Batgirl Christina was dope in a completely different aspect. It’s a toss-up!

With all the VMA news swirling about, I thought I’d post something that’ll either creep you out, or make you laugh hysterically (or if you’re me– both). The YouTube account claims that it’s 100% authentic, that he found this video at his grandmother (the woman in the lovely aquamarine blouse ensemble)’s home.

Video karaoke must have been cutting edge when this video was filmed, but the most timeless element of this clip is grampa with the confetti wig. Wait for it.

ALBUM REVIEW: New Kids on the Block - “The Block”

The New Kids on the Block are sneaky.  I’ll admit- having been a fan back in the day, I was interested in hearing what these mostly non-active musicians had to bring to the table 14 years after their last studio release (94’s Face the Music).  I was underwhelmed at first by “Summertime” but after some production re-tooling, producer RedOne shifted this project into overdrive just in time for this Tuesday’s release of The Block.  Yes, I rolled my eyes when I saw the album title too, you’re not alone.

But wait, The Pussycat Dolls, Ne-Yo, Lady Gaga, Akon, and NKOTB ex-rivals New Edition all on the roster of collaborators?? This is the point I officially became interested.

The high-energy vibe of over half of the album (noticeably “Big Girl Now” [featuring Gaga] and “Put It On My Tab” [featuring Akon]) stand out so-much-so that they could survive on their own as unpromoted singles in the club scene.

“Click Click Click” signifies that these kids are officially grown men, so comfortable rhyming about sexual exploits in front of and behind a camera lens, it puts less subtle attempts like Ray-J’s “Sexy Can I” to shame.

“Dirty Dancing” and “Lights Camera Action” along with “2 in the Morning” and the Ne-Yo-assisted “Single” are all stand out tracks making this album one of the most solid pop albums of the quarter.  The Timbaland-produced “Twisted” is nice too.

The only drawbacks on the album are Donnie Wahlberg’s rapping (on more than a couple tracks), Jonathan Knight’s non-existent presence (kinda like he’s just along for authenticity purposes) and the uber-trendy use of the vocoder on the banally-titled “Sexify My Love” (doesn’t Madonna get some kind of royalty cut from the title alone?).

OVERALL RATING: 8.5/10

Rage Against the Machine Leads Protest After Concert Shut Down

So what if Jon Voight was the only certifiable celebrity to show his face at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota this week. He may be the only one to have accredited access inside the event, but not too far outside yesterday afternoon were one of modern rock’s most political bands and their legion of supporters.

Zach de la Rocha and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine (in addition to Anti-Flag) were slated to perform a free show at the Minnesota State Capital in protest of the Republican principles (Morello cites “I think it’s important to call out the economic crimes at home and the war crimes abroad, while they’re here”)- but the cops shut down the show, even though their permits allowed them to perform until 7pm. The duo then lead an acapella version of “Bulls on Parade” (complete with the bow wow wow chikka” via loudspeaker), only to then march towards the convention in front of a crowd between 2,000 and 3,000 - getting as far as the first barrier. When several hundred refused to clear the way for police, tear gas was released, prompting moderate scuffles between the pedestrians and police.

DINNER’S READY!: 9/2/08 New Releases!

This coming week’s biggest releases are unquestionably New Kids on the Block and Young Jeezy (with Jeezy most likely coming out ontop), offering up a pretty good mix between pop heads and hip hop heads.  Don’t discredit the aging, reunited boy band however - their album is nicely assisted with cameos by some of today’s hottest acts, like Ne-Yo, Akon, and the Pussycat Dolls (as well as a collaboration no one saw coming, NKOTB alongside ex-rivals New Edition [minus Bobby Brown]).

Also out…

- The Recession - Young Jeezy

- Shine Through It - Terrence Howard

- Lost in the Sound of Separation - Underoath

yeah…. slow week.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!: DJ Sidekick Cuddles Up with Lady Gaga!

gagainterviewheader.jpg

Fellas, you remember your first real college party? There was that one girl at the party that was posted in the queen bee spot among all the cool girls? Yeah, her– the one that was showing just the right amount of midriff, and sipped on her drink like it was Dom Perignon (even though it was the same flat Natural Light we all had in our plastic red cups). Imagine her name is Lady Gaga, and she’s “polite” nice for the first five minutes, but by the end either the alcohol and/or your charm (emphasis on the charm of course) officially won her over, and you got a couple awkward grind dances out of it. K, now combine in a few DNA strands from David Bowie and Grace Jones‘ lovechild, and you’ve got my interview earlier last month with one of pop music’s fastest rising starlets.

Maybe it’s the fact that in some ways she’s the anti-starlet that’s garnering her this much attention but under the artistic wing of a dream-team of sorts between Akon and producer RedOne, “Just Dance” is one of the summer’s sleeper hits that’s becoming as infectious as it is respected.

The audio is kinda muffled at times, I’m blaming it on my mental images of the 22-year old (real name Stefani Germanotta) literally cuddling up with her phone receiver, purring into the ear (or at least the awkwardly placed speaker phone) on the other end of the line. She discusses everything from growing up in New York, being dropped by Def Jam, why she wasn’t necessarily sent to this planet to save Britney Spears, but she at least co-wrote two songs for her upcoming album (”Quicksand” and “Underground”) as well as New Kids on the Block (”Big Girl Now”), Nicole Scherzinger (”Whatever U Like”) and every song on her upcoming project The Fame in stores October 7th.

Check Out Robin Thicke’s New Album Cover

robinthicke.png

Robin Thicke’s camp has released cover artwork for his third album release Something Else. I can’t say it’s my favorite of the three, but the fact that he’s not straying from his Evolution of Robin Thicke theme of multiple, well, Robin Thickes, can’t be labeled too impractical (consider it achieved platinum status). Shit, it got me to type his name three times in one paragraph.

I still prefer the nude Paula Patton (his wife and recent baby muva) cover of his first album, though.

NEW MUSIC: Pussycat Dolls feat. Missy Elliott - “Whatcha Think About That?”

pussycat_dolls500.jpg

Missy Elliott loves the ladies. We know this. We embrace this. Furthermunch, she loves collaborating with them. Appropriately enough (and I love Missy, trust me, I really do), she’s teamed with the highest grossing female pop group in recent history (that whole “Bad Girl” collaboration with Danity Kane didn’t really do too much), the Pussycat Dolls for their alleged second single from their album Doll Domination. I’m completely underwhelmed by this record, and real talk, I’m starting to really question if Missy will ever be able to tap into her platinum-selling powers since splitting with Timbaland for her lackluster album The Cookbook (re-teaming with him for her upcoming might be too little too late?).

I’m also pretty sure my god son could have come up with the Katy Perry reference– and Nicole and crew, enough with the “cha” fits. I dontcha wantcha tocha hearcha itcha anychamorecha.
