2013 Golden Globe Awards: Ben Affleck, ‘Argo’ & ‘Homeland’ Take Big Wins

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association celebrated the accomplishments of the television and movie industry last night with the 2013 Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The 70th annual show was hosted by the undeniably funny and  charming duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Among those chosen as winners: Ben Affleck and Argo took Best Director and Best Drama for the film that captured the daring rescue of hostages in Iran during the 1970s. Affleck, who was left off the Academy Awards nominees list for Best Director, has now won two awards (the GG and the Critics’ Choice Award) for his film.

On the TV side, Showtime‘s Homeland dominated it’s categories with Best TV Show, Actress and Actor – Claire Danes and Damian Lewis earning the wins.

Other winners include Daniel Day-Lewis picked up the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama for his role in Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty’s Jessica Chastain took the top nod for Best Actress.

Christoph Waltz, Anne Hathaway, Quentin Tarantino, Don Cheadle and Lena Dunham also walked away with wins.

Jodie Foster was also honored for her work in the entertainment industry, presented to her by her good friend Robert Downey Jr. Foster made a passionate, sometimes rambling speech about carving out privacy for herself but also officially came out of the closet as a gay woman.

Hugh Jackman Gets His Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Hugh Jackman

Hunky actor Hugh Jackman was honored on Thursday at the unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.   He was joined by his family, including wife Deborrah-Lee Furness and children, Ava (7) and Oscar Jackman (12).  Also on hand to help him celebrate were his two lovely Les Misérables co-stars, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.   (Presumably Hathaway did all she could to avoid another embarrassing wardrobe malfunction.)  Late night host Jay Leno also spoke at the ceremony.

Jackman’s star is the 2,487th star in the famous landmark, and is located at 6931 Hollywood Blvd., in front of Madame Tussauds Hollywood.

The actor, who had just received a Golden Globe nomination for his Les Mis performance, admitted he felt a bit overwhelmed, but happy.  He said:

“It’s kind of a surreal day.  I’ll probably always remember Thursday, Dec. 13 and I think I’m either going straight from here to buy a lottery ticket or to a casino because it just feels like someone is looking down on me in a very nice way at this moment.”

Movies Opening Friday, October 5 – Frankenweenie, The Paperboy, Taken 2

 Taken 2 Movie Poster

Planning on catching a movie this weekend?  Here’s a peek at new movies opening this weekend (Friday, October 5, 2012).

Taken 2Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace are back for this sequel to the 2008 flick.  Retired CIA operative Bryan Mills (Neeson) and his wife are taken hostage in retaliation for his killing one of his daughter’s kidnappers in Taken.

FrankenweenieTim Burton‘s latest animated film tells the tale of Victor Frankenstein, who uses science to reanimate his dead dog.  I’m incredibly surprised to find neither Helena Bonham Carter nor Johnny Depp in the Frankenweenie cast, but you will enjoy the voice talents of Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Charlie Tahan and Christopher Lee.

Pitch Perfect – It’s men vs. women in a choral competition at the fictional Barden University.   Stars Brittany Snow, Anna Kendrick, Alexis Knapp, David Del Rio and Elizabeth Banks.

V/H/S – This “found footage” movie is an anthology of horror shorts “discovered” by a group of criminals who are hired to break into a house and steal a rare video tape.

The House I Live In – A documentary explores the war on drugs and the criminal justice system in the U.S. By Eugene Jarecki.

Butter (limited release) – Butter sculpture.  It’s an actual competitive event, and Jim Field Smith made a comedy about it.  The ensemble cast includes Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman, Ashley Greene and Alicia Silverstone.

The Paperboy (limited release) – Matthew McConaughey plays a reporter investigating a crime involving a death row inmate (John Cusack).  The Paperboy was directed by Lee Daniels and also features Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and Macy Gray.

Anne Hathaway Sings ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ For First ‘Les Miserables’ Trailer

Anne Hathaway landed the part of Fantine in the big screen adaptation of Les Miserables, due this Christmas and for the first time, we get to see a glimpse of her turn as the doomed (and singing) mother who ends up as a prostitute.

Set in 19th century France, Fantine is slowly dying while trying to provide for her and her daughter Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) and Hathaway takes on the desperate and haunting tune “I Dreamed A Dream.”

Fantine, who is forced from her job at a factory, sells her hair, then her teeth, before turning to prostitution. Hathaway reveals the powerful emotions of the tune through her surprisingly strong voice.

Hugh Jackman is the convict/factory owner Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe is Javert, the policeman bent on tracking Valjean down.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter also star in director Tom Hooper‘s (The King’s Speech) film.

The movie hits theaters in December 14th.

Anne Hathaway Joining ‘Les Misérables’ With Hugh Jackman

Tom Hooper is putting together an incredible cast for his upcoming take on Les Misérables.

The Oscar-winning director for The King’s Speech has landed Anne Hathaway to play Fantine in the movie adaptation based on the award-winning Broadway musical and Victor Hugo‘s novel.

Hathaway joins already signed Russell Crowe (Inspector Javert) and Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean) for the film, which may also nab Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter.

The movie may be shot in 3D and will start production in March. The projected released date is December of 2012.

Hathaway is Catwoman in the next Batman film from director Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will arrive in theaters on July 20, 2012.

‘The Wolverine’ Shoots This Fall

The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman has finally secured a replacement director and is getting set to shoot this fall.

James Mangold is 20th Century Fox’s and star Hugh Jackman’s choice to direct The Wolverine, ending one of the most competitive contests among directors for a major studio film. Negotiations are about to get underway, but I’m told that Mangold will take the helming job on the sequel to the X-Men spinoff film, a post that became vacant when Darren Aronofsky dropped out of the film in March.

This movie simply has to be better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I don’t think it’s possible that it could be as bad. Obviously I wasn’t a fan of that steaming pile of a movie, but with James Mangold directing I’m expecting a much better product. I’ve liked every movie I’ve seen that he’s made so far so I’m not expecting him to drop the ball on this one. This movie takes place in Japan for the most part, I wonder how much shooting will actually be done there?

‘Real Steel’ Posters Fail to Stimulate

Here are the two posters for the upcoming Hugh Jackman family movie Real Steel.

These posters are nothing special, much like a real boxing movie would have, yet this isn’t a real boxing movie. Everything about this movie just seems silly to me, I get the feeling it won’t do all that well. I’ve yet to hear anyone say anything positive when they hear about it or see the trailer. I hope Jackman doesn’t take any more roles like this.

Newest ‘Real Steel’ Trailer Has Kids Movie Written All Over It

Here’s the newest trailer for the upcoming movie Real Steel starring Hugh Jackman.

This trailer clearly plays to a younger audience, as well it should. I know the movie isn’t a literal Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em ROBOTS movie, but it might as well be. My interest in seeing this is next to none, I’ll get my robot fix from Transformers 3 thank you very much. I hope Hugh Jackman doesn’t keep taking roles like this.

Hugh Jackman Injured On ‘Oprah’s Ultimate Australian Adventure’

Oprah Winfrey is currently on the other side of the planet (enjoying summer weather by the way!) filming for her special Oprah’s Ultimate Australian Adventure. The TV talk show host will air four one-hour specials on all things Aussie early next year.

Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Steve Irwin’s family are all making their way to Sydney’s Oprah House (yep, that is the power of O – having the iconic Sydney Opera House renamed for her visit) for the taping of the special.

Also on deck is the all-sorts-of-awesome Hugh Jackman. The Wolverine star was attempting a grand entrance descending on a zip line to land on Oprah’s stage when something went awry and Jackman crashed into a lighting fixture. Oprah stopped filming to check out the chiseled man from Oz who was bleeding from the gash under his eye. Thankfully it wasn’t a serious injury.

After cleaning up and a bandage from the paramedics, our man Hugh was all right, he just took too long to pull the brake:

“That was so much fun – until the end,” he said. “I came down waving to everyone, looking over Sydney Harbour, saw my dad, the kids and you, went to pull the brake and then boing.”

Ah, Hugh. As the reporter in the video (check it below) says “That’s how much we love Oprah. We’ll take our most handsome, intelligent man and we’ll chuck him off the Opera House.”

It really is the power of Oprah! (Read the article)
