First Look at Gambit in ‘Wolverine’

This is the first image of the much anticipated introduction of Gambit to the X-Men franchise played by Taylor Kitsch. This is taken from the upcoming film X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Gambit first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #266 in August 1990. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artists Jim Lee and Mike Collins, Gambit is skilled in card throwing, hand-to-hand combat, the use of a b?, and possesses the ability to manipulate kinetic energy. A professional thief and self described ladies man, the character has had a longtime on and off again romantic fling with Rogue.

Gambit has always been one of my personal favorites in the X-Men universe. I was hoping he’d be introduced in the first three movies, but it’s hard to pull off such a high concept character. Hopefully the choice of Taylor Kitsch will be worth turning down the initial options of Josh Halloway or James Franco for the role. What do you think of the choice?

James Franco Doesn’t Sleep

James Franco says he doesn’t sleep much because there are so many things he wants to do with his time.

“I don’t sleep. I have a lot of interests and a lot I want to get done so I have gotten into the habit of not getting into my bed. I sit on the couch with my laptop until I fall asleep. I have the computer in a protective case because it often ends up falling to the floor.”

You can tell James doesn’t have children. I wish I could stay up and read a whole novel in a night but sleep calls to me and I have to go to bed.

I always wondered why he was always squinting looking tired. Now I know why! James get sleep now before you have kids. Because then you’ll never get enough sleep!

James Franco Is In Love With Sean Penn And Isn’t Afraid To Admit It

So I’ve been a little obsessed with the James Franco/Scott Smith-Sean Penn/Harvey Milk story, true.  Partly it’s that I remember when Harvey Milk was shot, and the outrage over Dan White’s moderately successful Twinkie Defense.   It’s a story that has been begging to be told for the last 30 years.   But I digress.

Anyhow, James Franco recently admitted that it wasn’t too hard for him to act the part of Sean Penn’s lover, because he already had some strong feelings for him:

Basically, I’ve been in love with him since even before “Fast Times.” He did this little thing called “The Beaver Trilogy.” … So, basically I’ve been in love with Sean Penn since “The Beaver Trilogy.”

Wow, that’s a long time, considering Franco was only one year old when the first of The Beaver Trilogy vignettes was filmed!!  I have a feeling, though, that gay men are the new lesbians in Hollywood now.  I sense a trend coming on!

James Franco Covers October 2008 Interview

James Franco is featured on the cover of this month’s Interview, looking just like James Dean in the cover image.  Franco’s is interviewed by Gus Van Sant, who directs him as Harvey Milk’s lover Scott Smith in the new movie Milk.

On being an art collector:

The first piece of art that I ever bought - when I could afford it - was a Warhol sketch from the period when he was just getting out of doing commercial work and more into art.  It’s a sketch of a young guy’s face.  I guess the gallery that I bought it from thought I would like it because the young guy kind of looked like James Dean.  I don’t know.  But I liked it because it was unusual for Warhol.  It was kind of before the silk screens or anything that is really recognizable - it’s almost like a fashion drawing, but it’s a portrait.

On researching the role of Scott Smith:

It was surprisingly hard to find material on him… Finally I went to Rob Epstein, who made the documentary on Harvey Milk that Scott’s in [The Times Of Harvey Milk, 1984] for, like, two seconds, and I asked him if he had any material.  Rob had done a pre-interview with Scott for the documentary, so finally I got to hear how he talked and see how he behaved.

On the play he co-wrote, called The Ape:

… It was basically a guy in an ape mask.  But it was very obvious that it was an ape mask, and that’s what I liked about it.  I had bought this wacky ape mask for something else, and I thought, “Wow, this mask is kind of scary but also kind of funny.  We could write a whole play around this mask.”  The jaw actually moved.

On playing a stoner in Pineapple Express:

I don’t really smoke weed anymore, so everyone says, “Oh, you looked really high in the movie.  How did you do that?”  And I say, “Oh, I just pretend the wind is in my eyes.”

On whether he really was high during the filming of the movie:

Basically we’d say, “Did you ever see Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke?  That’s what happens if you really smoke weed and make a movie.  You get two guys and no plot and it’s basically like, ‘Yeah!  Let’s drive a van made of weed!’”  And that’s pretty much the movie.

Sean Penn as ‘Milk’ New Trailer

Sean Penn stars in the film Milk

Milk tells the story of Harvey Milk (Penn), the first openly gay elected official in San Francisco. The trailer seems focused on telling the story of his campaign, and his fight for civil rights.

The film is directed by Gus Van Sant and also stars James Franco and Josh Brolin.

Where isn’t James Franco these days? From a stoner in Pineapple Express to Harvey Milk’s boyfriend in Milk, the face of Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme, he’s everywhere! Here’s his new ad for the cologne. What do you think? Does Franco rock the David Lynch-esque art house feel of this spot, or does he just come across as silly? Do you like Róisín Murphy’s cover of Bryan Ferry’s classic Slave to Love? Does it all make you want to smell like James Franco?

‘Pineapple Express’ is Smoky Fun

Pineapple Express is the new comedy from the Judd Apatow movie powerhouse. When stoner Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) visits his dealer Saul Silver (James Franco) he’s introduced to a new incredibly rare strain of weed called Pineapple Express. While smoking the new strain in his car Dale witnesses a murder committed by a cop and a powerful drug lord. He panics and drops the rest of the joint he was smoking, and crashes his car in an attempt to get away, bringing the attention of the murderers. Dale and Saul run for their lives in fear of the drug lord tracing them through the joint Dale left at the scene. They soon find that they aren’t just paranoid from the weed, ruthless killers really are hunting them down.

This film had me laughing throughout. From beginning to end it feels pretty fresh, and I don’t even smoke. I’m sure it’s that much better for a stoned audience. The scenes are funny, but the film isn’t quite as sharp as the trailer makes it look. The whole plot and execution never really gets past the level of silliness. It doesn’t take itself seriously, which is, in the long run, a good thing. The scenes are funny, but it’s a bit uneven in terms of pace. It goes from frantic, action packed scenes into much slower dialogue scenes that suck some of the energy out of the flow. My only major complaint about this film is its length. It’s a full hour and 45 minutes, I think it could have been trimmed in some of the slower scenes to make it an hour and thirty minutes. But overall it’s a fun story with wild and crazy antics that made me laugh a lot. I did walk out with a smile on my face.

The performances are pretty solid in this piece. Comedy is hard to pull off but James Franco and Seth Rogen make it look easy. The relationship these two portray is like that of old buddy cop movies, that love-hate dynamic keeps things interesting. The whole cast does a fine job bringing together all the elements of the offbeat goofy world scripted by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Visually this movie is pretty basic, don’t expect anything all that unique or appealing. Some of the sets are pretty colorful and it’s funny to see them being torn, crushed, smashed and splattered with blood. Really though, given the nature of the film, the comedy is really what steals the show.

Overall, this film is really fun, kooky and crazy. It’s great entertainment for stoners and the sober alike. It’s not perfect, and not as funny as some of the other films in the growing Judd Apatow collection, but it’s a welcome addition. I recommend it.

   Direction - 7       Performances - 8       Story - 6       Visuals - 7       Overall - 7/10

James Franco On Kissing Sean Penn

James Franco and Sean Penn star in Gus Van Sant’s upcoming biopic Milk, based on the life and times of the self-appointed “Mayor of Castro Street,” Harvey Milk. Penn plays Milk, and Franco plays his honey Scott Smith.

Filming certain scenes was slightly awkward for Franco.

“We’re sitting on the curb, kissing and it’s not stopping. A minute doesn’t sound like a long time, but, in front of 200 people, it’s a long time.

“Afterwards, we were like, ‘All right, how are those Raiders?’”

Sadly for Oakland fans, the answer to that question is “crappy,” but good for James for taking this role. In fact, good for both stars. This is a story that deserves to be told, and they’re both so talented, I’m sure they’ll do it incredible justice.

Catch this much-buzzed flick in theaters starting December 5th… just in time to be considered for an Oscar?!
