Johnny Depp has found himself in some hot water for comments he made in the November issue of Vanity Fair.
The 48 year-old actor discussed how he felt “raped” after doing a photo shoot with the magazine.
“Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow,” Depp said. “Raped … It feels like a kind of weird — just weird, man… Whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like — you just feel dumb. It’s just so stupid.”
Comparing an intrusive photography session to a violent act of rape has upset victim’s groups with RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) speaking out against the actor’s choice of words.
“While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape — a violent crime which affects another American every 2 minutes,” Katherine Hull, spokesperson for RAINN said in a statement.
“RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help.”
Depp finds himself in the same category Kristen Stewart did in the spring of 2010 after her remarks to British Elle where she compared rape to the way she felt after the intrusive paparazzi took photos of her.
The analogy is off-base and Johnny will likely apologize. He has never come across as a thoughtless celebrity so I imagine he will issue a statement regretting his choice of words.
