Judd Apatow Producing New ‘Pee-wee Herman’ Film

Judd Apatow is set to produce the new Pee-wee Herman film that is in development.

Judd Apatow is developing an untitled Pee-wee Herman feature for Universal that Paul Reubens is writing with thesp-scribe Paul Rust (“Inglourious Basterds,” “I Love You, Beth Cooper”). Apatow will produce through his Apatow Prods. banner, though he will not helm the project. Pic is described as featuring the iconic geek — known for his love of toys and nerdy catchphrases like “I know you are, but what am I?” — in a road pic built around “a gigantic adventure.”

“Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman,” Apatow told Daily Variety. “I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens — who is an extraordinary and ground-breaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.”

This movie is probably going to be great, especially with Apatow behind it. I’m looking forward too seeing this one develop, hope we see it by 2012.

If you didn’t know already, there is another movie in the works from the people who brought you Forgetting Sara Marshall entitled Get Him to the Greek, this one is all about the hilarious character Aidous Snow played by Russell Brand. Here’s what he had to say about it on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

“I’m playing that character, Aidous Snow again, in a movie that Judd Apatow is producing. I’m starring alongside the brilliant actor Jonah Hill. [In the movie] Aidous Snow has gone back on drugs and Jonah Hill is his friend and they go on many adventures together. It’s very exciting.”

Sarah Marshall helmer Nicholas Stoller is signed to direct. Russell supposedly already filmed a montage of sex scenes last summer featuring a series of celebrity cameos which include Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera and Pink.

Sounds like it’s going to be pretty funny, glad to see them same team working together again. Forgetting Sara Marshall was hilarious.

Judd Apatow Horror Film?

Apparently Judd Apatow wants to add horror to his huge growing comedy legacy with Bill Hader writing the script.

What would an Apatow-produced slasher film from Rich and Hader be like? Says Bill:‘It’s partiallyStraw DogsmeetsHalloweenmeetsHome AlonemeetsMonster Squad.’It’s hard to argue against that.

‘I don’t know if it’s even going to get made,’Hader told me.’Judd met with us and said “I want to do a horror movie with you. I want to see you in a slasher movie.”‘

The film will be a horror comedy, and while Hader danced around giving away too much, he did describe it to me like this:‘It is definitely about guys nowadays, that idea that you watch fucked up shit on TV, how violence in our culture – this sounds really hoity toity – you watch fucked up reality shows, I love true crime shows. The idea of that thing coming to your house, and what do you do? I would shit my pants. That’s basically what the movie is about. What if that guy decided to come to your house? What would you and your dipshit friends do about it?

With the comedy factor mixed in, an Apatow slasher flick could be pretty different, but will it be scary? Doubtful.

‘Pineapple Express’ is Smoky Fun

Pineapple Express is the new comedy from the Judd Apatow movie powerhouse. When stoner Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) visits his dealer Saul Silver (James Franco) he’s introduced to a new incredibly rare strain of weed called Pineapple Express. While smoking the new strain in his car Dale witnesses a murder committed by a cop and a powerful drug lord. He panics and drops the rest of the joint he was smoking, and crashes his car in an attempt to get away, bringing the attention of the murderers. Dale and Saul run for their lives in fear of the drug lord tracing them through the joint Dale left at the scene. They soon find that they aren’t just paranoid from the weed, ruthless killers really are hunting them down.

This film had me laughing throughout. From beginning to end it feels pretty fresh, and I don’t even smoke. I’m sure it’s that much better for a stoned audience. The scenes are funny, but the film isn’t quite as sharp as the trailer makes it look. The whole plot and execution never really gets past the level of silliness. It doesn’t take itself seriously, which is, in the long run, a good thing. The scenes are funny, but it’s a bit uneven in terms of pace. It goes from frantic, action packed scenes into much slower dialogue scenes that suck some of the energy out of the flow. My only major complaint about this film is its length. It’s a full hour and 45 minutes, I think it could have been trimmed in some of the slower scenes to make it an hour and thirty minutes. But overall it’s a fun story with wild and crazy antics that made me laugh a lot. I did walk out with a smile on my face.

The performances are pretty solid in this piece. Comedy is hard to pull off but James Franco and Seth Rogen make it look easy. The relationship these two portray is like that of old buddy cop movies, that love-hate dynamic keeps things interesting. The whole cast does a fine job bringing together all the elements of the offbeat goofy world scripted by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Visually this movie is pretty basic, don’t expect anything all that unique or appealing. Some of the sets are pretty colorful and it’s funny to see them being torn, crushed, smashed and splattered with blood. Really though, given the nature of the film, the comedy is really what steals the show.

Overall, this film is really fun, kooky and crazy. It’s great entertainment for stoners and the sober alike. It’s not perfect, and not as funny as some of the other films in the growing Judd Apatow collection, but it’s a welcome addition. I recommend it.
