After months of speculation, Katie Couric has formally announced she is leaving the job as news anchor on the CBS Evening News.

Couric has held the position for 5 years as the first woman to anchor a nightly news program alone.

“I have decided to step down from the CBS Evening News,” the journalist said in a statement.

“I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do,” the 54-year-old broadcast veteran explains. “In making the decision to move on, I know Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future.”

Couric isn’t done with television. She says she’s trying to find a more appropriate venue for what she’s interested in.

“I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling,” she says. “The bottom line is that I love doing all kinds of different stories. I have a lot of areas of interest and I want to be able to fulfill all of that.”

Katie’s ratings never took off and there was always speculation of CBS not renewing her contract, but in the end, she made the call and is free to move and pursue something else.

Couric is thought to have offers from both CBS and ABC for syndicated daytime talkshows and possible morning show duties as well.

Her contract expires June 2011.

Katie Couric is off to McKinley High School for a guest spot confirms the anchor’s rep. She will appear on the super-sized episode of Glee that follows the ultimate football championship – the Super Bowl. The show will focus on the high school football team and the cheerleader squad (of which many of the New Directions show choir students are members) and their attempt at championship/regionals. Cheerios and Coach Beiste FTW!

I humbly request, Couric and Jane Lynch’s Coach Sue Sylvester in at least one scene, please!

A warrant has been issued for newswoman Katie Couric for unpaid taxes dating back to 2003.

E! Online reports that The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is serious about Katie paying her unpaid tax bill – for $210.41.

Rep Matthew Hiltzik characterized the debt as a minor oversight, telling the New York Daily News that her bills were being sent to an old address. Couric’s on vacation, he added, and will settle the matter upon her return.

Are they going after her on principle?� She makes gazmillions of dollars a year – surely a couple hundred bucks is peanuts compared to what the State of New York regularly gets from her in income taxes!� Maybe someone at the tax department doesn’t like the job she’s doing on the CBS Evening News either!
