Oscars 2012: Who Took Home An Academy Award

The 84th Annual Academy Awards were held in Hollywood at the Kodak Theatre (or as host Billy Crystal quipped – the Chapter 11 Theater) on Sunday night and there were few surprises.

Crystal was his usual affable, likable self; the ratings were up slightly from last year but there were no really big wow moments to the 2012 Oscars.

The biggest winners of the night were Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo and Michel HazanaviciusThe Artist – each taking 5 wins, although The Artist won the biggest nods of Best Director, Best Feature and Best Leading Actor among it’s accolades.

The Help star Octavia Spencer had a very sweet moment at the podium when she was genuinely overcome with emotion as she accepted her Best Supporting Actress gold statue.

Chistopher Plummer and Meryl Streep were also very engaging during their thank you speeches and Jean Dujardin shared a moment with Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier of The Artist that has become a fan favorite.

Viola Davis and George Clooney were hot contenders for Best Actress and Actor categories, respectively, but both walked away empty handed.

Among the presenters for the evening: Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez, Tom Hanks, Cameron Diaz, Tina Fey, Michael Douglas, Bradley Cooper, Chris Rock, Melissa Leo, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Emma Stone.

Michelle Williams: Spirit Awards Winner

Michelle Williams holds her trophy from the 27th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California on Saturday (February 25th) night.

She wore a Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2012 navy and white shorts suit with buttoned up blouse. Williams also chose an embroidered Catcher In The Rye clutch from Olympia Le Tan.

The My Week With Marilyn actress won the Best Female Lead award; remembering her first appearance at this show years ago and thanking the “mistifts, outcasts, loners.”

“I wore my own clothes, which were not very good,” Williams said. “And I cut my own hair, which was not very good. But I still remember feeling that in this room, that was O.K., possibly even preferred.

“And what I thought then, and I still feel now, is that it’s because this is a room full of misfits, outcasts, loners, dreamers, mumblers, delinquents, dropouts – just like me. And I want to say thank you for supporting me, and welcoming me and making me feel at home in this room and in this community, all the way back then, and now, when the only thing that I own that I’m wearing is my dignity. Thank you very much.”

Williams is also nominated for an Oscar at tonight’s broadcast.

2012 Independent Spirit Awards: FULL Winners List

The Artist was tops at the 27th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards held in Santa Monica, California on Saturday (February 25th) night.

Seth Rogen hosted the ceremony which may turn out to be a preview for the winners of tonight’s Academy Awards show.

Among The Artist’s accolades for the night: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Male Lead and Best Cinematographer prompting the host to joke about it’s dominance.

“‘The Artist’ is winning everything,” Rogen told the audience. “I thought this is why we created a foreign film category. We can’t compete with them.”

Michelle Williams took the Best Female Lead prize for her turn as the iconic Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn and George Clooney‘s costar in The Descendants, Shailene Woodley grabbed the win for Best Supporting Female Actress.

Chistopher Plummer and Rogen’s 50/50 also ended up with trophies.

Michelle Williams At The 2012 SAG Awards

Michelle Williams

Nominee Michelle Williams chose a red dress for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday.  The asymmetrical Valentino gown featured lace detail at the bodice and sleeves.  Red ankle strap sandals completed Williams’ monochromatic ensemble.

This is a nice dress and of course Williams is always very pretty, but I’m not crazy about this look.   There’s no “WOW!” to it, know what I mean?   The shoes are fab, though – they just need to be paired with a different dress.

More pictures follow.

WATCH: Michelle Williams Take On Marilyn Monroe In ‘My Week With Marilyn’

Michelle Williams is taking on the screen legend and icon Marilyn Monroe (see her Monroe inspired October cover and photo spread for Vogue here) for the biopic My Week with Marilyn.

The story takes place during the filming of The Prince and the Showgirl, which Monroe and Sir Lawrence Olivier (played by Kenneth Branagh) filmed in the summer of 1956 in England.

Monroe, who was just married to playwright Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott) at the time, was accompanied by production assistant Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) who went on to write about the experience – with one week missing.

That stretch of time is the film’s core – when the 23 year-old was enraptured with the Hollywood star and pulled into her life.

Dominic Cooper, Dame Judi Dench, Julia Ormond and Emma Watson costar.

For any actress to play a larger-than-life persona like Monroe, the task can be daunting and intimidating so will she pull it off? Check out the trailer and see what you think.

Michelle Williams Transforms As Marilyn Monroe & Covers Vogue

Taking on the role of Marilyn Monroe is a daunting task for any actress and Michelle Williams does so for both her upcoming film, My Week with Marilyn and for the Vogue October issue.

The 31 year-old actress said that no matter how hard she tried to convince herself not to take on the role of Monroe, she felt compelled to do it.

“As soon as I finished the script [for My Week with Marilyn], I knew that I wanted to do it, and then I spent six months trying to talk myself out of it. But I always knew that I never really had a choice. I’ve started to believe that you get the piece of material that you were ready for.”

Williams said that being Monroe around other people gave her a small sense of what the iconic blonde must’ve felt as people, men in particular, watched her.

“But I do remember one moment of being all suited up as Marilyn and walking from my dressing room onto the soundstage practicing my wiggle,” Williams tells the magazine. “There were three or four men gathered around a truck, and I remember seeing that they were watching me come and feeling that they were watching me go–and for the very first time I glimpsed some idea of the pleasure I could take in that kind of attention; not their pleasure but my pleasure. And I thought, Oh, maybe Marilyn felt that when she walked down the beach.”

My Week with Marilyn will debut at the New York Film Festival and will open in theaters on November 4th.

Michelle Williams 2011 Golden Globe Awards

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place in Beverly Hills, California at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday January 16th.

Michelle Williams was on hand as a nominee in Best Actress Drama category for her role in Blue Valentine. Williams lost out to Black Swan’s Natalie Portman.

Williams wore a lovely whimsical Valentino Resort 2011 taupe colored dress with embroidered daisies and daisy straps. I like this dress, but it looks too casual for the Golden Globes.
