Celebrity Tributes Pour In For Paul Newman

The world is still mourning the loss of Paul Newman. He was a legend and the movie world will never be the same. Celebrity tributes to Paul have started to pour in and I thought I would share some of them…

“For me personally, his is the kind of life I would like to lead in this industry. Not only was he classy and phenomenally talented, but he led a normal life. He was also extraordinarily philanthropic and gave back such a tremendous amount. He was the ultimate role model.” —Leonardo DiCaprio

“There is a point where feelings go beyond words. I have lost a real friend. My life—and this country—is better for his being in it.” —Robert Redford, who costarred with Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting

“The history of movies without Paul Newman? It’s unthinkable. His presence, his beauty, his physical eloquence, the emotional complexity he could conjure up and transmit though his acting in so many movies—where would we be without him?” —Martin Scorsese, who directed Newman in his Oscar-winning performance in The Color of Money

“He was one of those guys who was an inspiration to my whole life. And he always came up with something interesting. He gave some magnificent performances.” —Russell Crowe

“Paul was a very fine actor and a really good race driver. But mostly, he personified humanity—always taking care of those who were less fortunate. For me, this will be his legacy.” —David Letterman

“He was my hero.” —Julia Roberts

And lastly a statement from Paul’s three daughters…

“Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles. But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee. Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather. Dedicated philanthropist…Always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune. In his own words: ‘It’s been a privilege to be here.’ He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves us with extraordinary inspiration to draw upon. During this difficult time, we ask for privacy for our family.” —Elinor, Melissa and Claire, whose mother is Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward

He will be missed forever.

The Story Behind ‘A Beautiful Mind’

A Beautiful Mind

A Beautiful Mind, the Oscar-winning film starring Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, is airing on TNT tomorrow night.  The story portrays the life of real-life mathematical genius, John Forbes Nash.

John Forbes Nash Jr. [is] a mathmatical prodigy able to solve problems that baffled the greatest of minds.  He overcame years of suffering through schizophrenia to win the Nobel Prize.

[Nash] made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a painful and harrowing journey of self-discovery. After many years of struggle, he eventually triumphed over his tragedy, and finally - late in life - received the Nobel Prize.

[While] at Princeton University, Nash struggles to make a worthwhile contribution to serve as his legacy to the world of mathematics. He finally makes a revolutionary breakthrough that will eventually earn him the Nobel Prize. After graduate school he turns to teaching, becoming romantically involved with his student Alicia. Meanwhile the government asks his help with breaking Soviet codes, which soon gets him involved in a terrifying conspiracy plot. Nash grows more and more paranoid until a discovery that turns his entire world upside down. Now it is only with Alicia’s help that he will be able to recover his mental strength and regain his status as the great mathematician we know him as today.

John Nash was born in 1928 and is still alive today.  According to campus legend, Nash became “The Phantom of Fine Hall,” Princeton’s mathematics center, known as a shadowy figure who would scribble arcane equations on blackboards in the middle of the night.  A Beautiful Mind airs Sunday, December 2, at 8:00 p.m. and again at 10:15 p.m. on TNT.
