2013 Golden Globe Awards: Ben Affleck, ‘Argo’ & ‘Homeland’ Take Big Wins

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association celebrated the accomplishments of the television and movie industry last night with the 2013 Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The 70th annual show was hosted by the undeniably funny and  charming duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Among those chosen as winners: Ben Affleck and Argo took Best Director and Best Drama for the film that captured the daring rescue of hostages in Iran during the 1970s. Affleck, who was left off the Academy Awards nominees list for Best Director, has now won two awards (the GG and the Critics’ Choice Award) for his film.

On the TV side, Showtime‘s Homeland dominated it’s categories with Best TV Show, Actress and Actor – Claire Danes and Damian Lewis earning the wins.

Other winners include Daniel Day-Lewis picked up the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama for his role in Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty’s Jessica Chastain took the top nod for Best Actress.

Christoph Waltz, Anne Hathaway, Quentin Tarantino, Don Cheadle and Lena Dunham also walked away with wins.

Jodie Foster was also honored for her work in the entertainment industry, presented to her by her good friend Robert Downey Jr. Foster made a passionate, sometimes rambling speech about carving out privacy for herself but also officially came out of the closet as a gay woman.

30 Rock: Liz Lemon Is Getting Married At Last. Whatever.

Tina Fey

30 Rock is in its last season and creator Tina Fey isn’t going to let her series end without giving Liz Lemon (played by Fey) a happy ending.  The perpetually harried and unlucky in love Lemon will marry her beau, Criss Chross (James Marsden) this month.   NBC issued a “save the date” to ensure that viewers don’t double book themselves. It reads:

“Ms. Elizabeth Miervaldis Lemon presents herself to be married to Mr. Crisstopher Rick Chross… but not in a creepy way that perpetuates the idea that brides are virgins and women are property.

“She’s 42.  Whatever.  It’s no big whoop.”

The happy occasion will air on November 29th at 8/7C.

Liz and Criss  have been an item for two seasons, and she says it’s a good thing.  Quoth Liz:

“I’m more relaxed around him. My jaws stopped popping. And for once I’m not overthinking everything.”

High praise from the stress ball.  By the way, you’re not being fed at this shindig, so bring your own snacks.

Tina Fey & Amy Poehler Will Host The Golden Globe Awards

The Golden Globe Awards will have two hosts this year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press announced Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are taking the podium together for the 70th Annual Golden Globes in January.

“The unparalleled comedic timing of Tina and Amy will surely have viewers wanting to tune-in to see them in action,” said Takla-O’Reilly, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which honors film and TV at the Beverly Hills Hilton ceremony. “The HFPA is thrilled to have the magnetic duo be a part of the show’s 70th anniversary!”

The comediennes and writers have worked together before in film with Mean Girls and Baby Mama and on the small screen as part of Saturday Night Live. Their style of comedy and approach to hosting the ceremony should be a welcome change for those who did not like the sharp barbs of Ricky Gervais, the host of the past two years.

Gervais sent his good wishes to Fey and Poehler, in true Ricky G style:

“Good luck to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes,” he said Tuesday in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “After failing three years in a row to make E! Channel’s Best Dressed list, I decided to hand over the reins. Let me know if you run out of Scientology gags.”

The Golden Globes will air on January 13, 2013 on NBC.

Oscars 2012: Who Took Home An Academy Award

The 84th Annual Academy Awards were held in Hollywood at the Kodak Theatre (or as host Billy Crystal quipped – the Chapter 11 Theater) on Sunday night and there were few surprises.

Crystal was his usual affable, likable self; the ratings were up slightly from last year but there were no really big wow moments to the 2012 Oscars.

The biggest winners of the night were Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo and Michel HazanaviciusThe Artist – each taking 5 wins, although The Artist won the biggest nods of Best Director, Best Feature and Best Leading Actor among it’s accolades.

The Help star Octavia Spencer had a very sweet moment at the podium when she was genuinely overcome with emotion as she accepted her Best Supporting Actress gold statue.

Chistopher Plummer and Meryl Streep were also very engaging during their thank you speeches and Jean Dujardin shared a moment with Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier of The Artist that has become a fan favorite.

Viola Davis and George Clooney were hot contenders for Best Actress and Actor categories, respectively, but both walked away empty handed.

Among the presenters for the evening: Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez, Tom Hanks, Cameron Diaz, Tina Fey, Michael Douglas, Bradley Cooper, Chris Rock, Melissa Leo, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Emma Stone.

Tina Fey has delivered yet again!

Penelope Athena is the name Fey and her husband, composer Jeffrey Richmond chose for their child.

The 30 Rock star told Ellen DeGeneres that they did not know the sex of their baby and were waiting to find out. Penelope joins her big sister Alice, in the Fey-Richmond home.

In her book, Bossypants, the former SNL star joked about giving Alice a sibling.

“I thought that raising an only child would be the norm in Manhattan, but my daughter is the only child in her class without a sibling,” Fey wrote. “Most kids have at least two.”

“Who will be my daughter’s family when my husband and I are dead from stress-induced cankers?” she joked. “She must have a sibling.”

The deed is done.

Funny Ladies: Tina Fey & Amy Poehler At The NBC Upfront

Saturday Night Live alums and homegirls Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made an appearance at NBC’s upfront presentation this week.  Both of their shows, 30 Rock and Parks & Recreation are safely ensconced in NBC’s lineup, so they should both be feeling pretty good.

Tina looks fantastic, as always.  Is there really a baby bump under there?  Amy is Mommy to a new baby herself – baby Abel James is just 9 months old.

Tina Fey Covers InStyle Magazine, Sympathizes With Gwyneth Paltrow

Tina Fey lands on the cover of the April 2011 issue of InStyle.

The multi-talented Fey is not only writing and starring on TV’s 30 Rock, she has authored a book, Bossypants, out April 5th where she tackles her own life with her dead-on sense of humor.

While the actress may be in charge of somethings, Fey claims her daughter is the boss of her.

“My daughter. Kids are definitely the boss of you,” she said. “Anyone who will barge into the room while you are on the commode is the boss of you. And when you explain to them that you’re on the commode and that they should leave but they don’t? That’s a high-level boss.”

Although the 40 year-old comedienne jokes about her daughter’s ability to rule her even during a bathroom break, she isn’t all laughs about how harsh the internet critics can be.

“Any time you talk about being a working mother and you complain about it in any way, people eat your face,” she says. “I remember reading some interview where Gwyneth Paltrow said something like, ‘I missed my kids on the set one day and I was crying.’ And I thought, Yeah, I’ve totally done that.”

The 30 Rock star went on to say “But on the website where I read it there were these furious comments. ‘But you’re a movie star!’ Yes, it’s much worse for a mom serving in Afghanistan. Of course. But there’s just no forgiveness.”

For more of what Tina’s got to say, grab the issue on sale Friday.
