The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday January 30th with Winona Ryder hitting the red carpet for the 2011 SAG ceremony.

Ryder wore a lovely white strapless gown with tiered skirting from Alberta Ferretti to the event. The Black Swan actress did not win any awards last night but did have two nominations.

Ah, Winona Ryder.  If you are about my age, back in the 1980s and 1990s you either wanted to be her or do her, depending on your gender and sexual orientation.   She seems to slowly be building her career back after those nasty little incidents involving drugs and shoplifting several years ago, and currently appears with Natalie Portman in Black Swan.

Winona is also featured in January 2011′s GQ.  And while the interview and article are lame and forgettable, the photoshoot is quite the opposite.   She is sexy, intelligent, mysterious, very, very cool – and doesn’t try for a minute to look any younger than her 39 years, which I totally respect.  Yeah, I was one of those who totally idolized-slash-girl-crushed on her.   I thought maybe I was over it, but really, what’s the rush?   But I really do have to motor if I’m going to make it to that funeral on time.

Adding her considerable charm and talent to the latest Ron Howard directed comedy, Winona Ryder beat out a number of other high profile actresses to become the female lead in the movie (formerly known as) Cheaters. Ryder came away the victor after beating out Carla Gugino, Kate Beckensale and Uma Thurman.

Why is the role so coveted? Well it turns out the film is no tried-and-true fat guy/hot wife comedy. Rather, the movie, from screenwriter Allan Loeb (21), centers on two best friends, played by [Kevin] James and [Vince] Vaughn. When Vaughn’s character discovers that James’ wife (Ryder) has cheated on his best friend, he confronts her directly and must decide whether or not he will tell his friend. (Thus, the film often pits Ryder’s character opposite Vaughn’s.)

Looking forward to Ryder and Vaughn going at each other on the big screen.

Ryder will also be in Black Swan with Natalie Portman.

Here’s the poster for the new film Stay Cool starring Winona Ryder, Hilary Duff, Sean Astin and Josh Holloway.

An author who returns to his hometown to deliver a commencement address to a class of graduating high school students has to deal with his feelings for an old flame as well as the advances of a student who has the hots for him.

Not my kind of movie, but it has some good actors in it. Sean Astin hasn’t done much since Lord of the Rings, I can’t help but wonder why.

Winona Ryder could be joining the already excellent female cast of the new film Black Swan.

Winona Ryder is in talks to co-star in Darren Aronofsky’s supernatural thriller “Black Swan” opposite Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis.

Set in the New York ballet world, the story centers on a veteran dancer (Portman) and a rival (Kunis) who are tangled in a manipulative relationship, but it’s unclear whether the rival is real or a figment of the ballet dancer’s imagination. Ryder will play a fellow dancer.

Actress, whose career had been dormant for nearly a decade, has begun to work again in high-profile projects. This summer, she portrayed Spock’s mother in the “Star Trek” reboot. She will next be seen in Rebecca Miller’s “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.”

I would watch this movie simply based on the fact that Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis are in it. Not to mention Darren Aronofsky directing, but with Ryder jumping onboard I’m even more interested somehow.

Winona Ryder is back and on the cover of the December issue of BlackBook Magazine. The actress who was on every director’s wishlist took a bit of a sabbatical from movie making after some personal troubles and an arrest for shoplifting. After letting the scandal die down and getting herself together, she is quietly making movies again. Sitting down at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles here are some excerpts from her interview:

On Matt Damon and Johnny Depp: “Matt couldn’t be a greater, nicer guy. I’m really lucky that I’m on good terms with him. With Johnny, it’s like we’re good, but we lead very different lives… ”

On her relationship with the press: “This weird thing happens when you’re written about in magazines, where you start to think, This is who I am. This is how I have to be. I felt restricted and pressured into being the way people perceived me. It was hard for me to find my footing. The Johnny thing made me really afraid of the press because, even though it was about him, I was beside him the entire time.”

On Angelina Jolie who won the 1999 Academy Award for best supporting actress for Girl, Interrupted (Winona starred in and produced the film): “I never had any bad feelings about Angelina. And I was hurt that people thought that. Everyone assumed I was really jealous because I thought this would be my vehicle. We said from the very beginning that the actress who played Lisa would probably win an Oscar, because it was the big, great, showy part. But I always related to Susanna… I fought very hard for [Angelina] to have that part, and I never really felt like I got the chance to know her.”

On if Angelina ever personally thanked her for helping to jump-start her career: “I feel like it won’t read in print very nicely if I say that wasn’t really her style. But she seems to be a completely different person now.”

Winona Ryder has always been one of my favorite actresses. From Beetlejuice, Dracula, Heathers, Little Women, Girl Interrupted, Mermaids, Edward Scissorhands, Reality Bites, Mister Deeds and A Scanner Darkly among so many more, she has a knack for choosing interesting parts, directors and co-stars.

Her latest film, The Adventures Of Pippa Lee, opens in December and stars Keanu Reeves and Robin Wright Penn.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has published a blind item, which allegedly bashes “frenemy” Winona Ryder, in her Goop Newsletter. The actress doesn’t mention the name of her frenemy but just announced to be glad that “someone” and her venom are finally out of her life.

Back in the day, I had a “frenemy” who, as it turned out, was pretty hell-bent on taking me down. This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous. I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and…happiness. There went the high road. So, why does it feel so good to hear something bad about someone you don’t like? Or someone you DO like? Or someone you don’t KNOW? I once asked the editor of a tabloid newspaper why all of the stories about a famous British couple had a negative bent. He said that when the headline was positive, the paper didn’t sell. Why is that? What’s wrong with us? I asked the sages to shed a little light.

I think in some way we can all related to that, but it would be a lot more honest and righteous of Gwyneth to name the person she is talking about. So then maybe she/he could also defend herself/himself. There are always two sides of a story, everybody is human and everyone makes mistakes.

Even Gwyneth questions her shameful feelings for this “frenemy”:

Question: I’m curious about the spiritual concept of “evil tongue” (speaking evil of others) and its pervasiveness in our culture. Why do people become energized when they say or read something negative about someone else? What does it say about where that person is? What are the consequences of perpetuating negativity or feeling schadenfreude?

New mom Nicole Richie and Christina Ricci got the cutest dresses they could find out of the closet to WOW at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2009 in New York. Keanu Reaves and Winona Ryder are getting pretty friendly with each other on the set of their new movie, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.�� Star Magazine says:

the two iconic stars have been spending lots of time in each other’s trailers.� “They are also always hugging on the set,” says a source. “The chemistry is really electric.”

There is something about them making out in their trailers on set that sounds very high school to me!� But there is also something about them that seems very well suited – edgy and kind of 1980s.�� Hopefully it works out!

Actress Winona Ryder was convicted of shoplifting six years ago after security guards at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills witnessed her pinching designer duds. Allegedly, the actress is at it again. This time a cosmetics store in Hollywood is the victim of the sticky fingers.

Now in a new incident, according to America’s National Enquirer magazine, the Girl Interrupted star recently set off the security alarm at Hollywood CVC Pharmacy after making several purchases.

According to the publication, when she left the store, she set off an alarm that drew the attention of a security guard.

A store employee is quoted as saying: “Winona had a bag of stuff, but she set off the theft alarm when she left the store.

“When a security guard stopped her, he found make-up she had not paid for.”

And when she was asked about the make-up, Winona answered: “I don’t know how that happened.”

The store employee added: “We took unpaid items back and she left the store.”

Winona’s publicist at first denied the incident took place. But when told a store employee had confirmed it, said she would check with her again.

Her three years probation and 480 hours of community service are completed from her original conviction. Sounds like therapy might be in order – and not retail.
